VA firestorm to lead Sunday talk shows

By Rachel Huggins

A growing political firestorm over allegations of treatment delays and secret wait lists at veterans hospitals nationwide will likely dominate Sunday news shows.

The top official for veterans' healthcare Robert Petzel resigned Friday, one day after testifying before a Senate panel over allegations that some VA facilities deliberately hid long wait times for patients, resulting in at least 40 deaths in an Arizona VA hospital. VA Secretary Eric Shinseki, who faces calls to resign, said he was "mad as hell" after being grilled by lawmakers in Thursday's hearing.

House Republicans scheduled a vote for Wednesday on legislation that would give Shinseki expanded authority to fire senior executives at the agency and its 152 medical centers.

Other topics on the shows include the 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, and sexual assault on college campuses.

Here's the lineup:

CBS' "Face the Nation" will talk with White House chief of staff Denis McDonough about the latest developments surrounding the Veteran Affairs investigation. McDonough will give the scoop on what the Obama Administration is doing to address reports of VA facilities concealing long wait times for patients. Earlier this week, President Obama dispatched his top aide Rob Nabors to run a review of the VA’s patient safety rules and appointment procedures.

Daniel Dellinger, who heads the nation's most prominent Veteran's organization, The American Legion, will weigh in on how veterans are being affected by the scandal and congressional probe. The American Legion called last week for the resignation of VA secretary Eric Shinseki. Former Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will join in to promote his new book, "Stress Test: Reflections on Financial Crises. Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will discuss the opening of the September 11 Memorial & Museum and what he hopes visitors will take away from the site.

"Fox News Sunday" will sit-down with Ryan Gallucci, deputy director of the Veterans of Foreign Wars' National Veterans Service directorate. Former Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne in their first joint interview since leaving the White House in 2009.

ABC's "This Week" will examine the sexual assault epidemic on U.S. campuses with University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto. Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and Berin Szoka, president of Tech Freedom will weigh in on privacy in the 21st Century amid a leaked video of rapper Jay Z being assaulted by Beyonce's sister, Solange Knowles in a hotel elevator.

NBC's "Meet the Press" will feature Sen. Claire McCaskill, (D-Mo.) Rep. Adam Kinzinger, (R-Ill.) and journalist Glenn Greenwald.

CNN's "State of the Union" will have a conversation with Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick about race and equality in U.S. schools as the nation marks the 60th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education, the landmark civil rights case that outlawed school segregation.

Between Benghazi and the continuing VA death list scandal, I don't see how any incumbent Democrat escapes the wrath of the voters.  Coat-tails work both ways, and if the Hildebeest decides to run, Veterans will make what the Swiftboat Veterans did to John Fing Kerry look like a Cub Scout picnic.  And there are plenty of Democrat veterans in the Heartland...
