Reid: Amend the Constitution to Stop Koch Bros.

"Let’s…put a stop to the hostile takeover of our democratic system by a couple of billionaire oil barons.”

 Trey Sanchez |

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is further proving that he will stop at nothing to end the reign of terror of the Koch brothers. Thursday, Reid will propose a constitutional amendment that would give Congress regulation authority to limit federal campaign contributions and spending.

A preview of his speech:

The Kochs’ bid for a hostile takeover of American democracy is calculated to make themselves even richer. Yet the Kochs and their Republican followers in Congress continue to assert that these hundreds of millions of dollars are free speech. For evidence of that, look no further than the Republican Leader, who has flat out said, ‘in our society, spending is speech.’....I urge my colleagues to support this constitutional amendment — to rally behind our democracy. I understand what we Senate Democrats are proposing is no small thing — amending our Constitution is not something we take lightly. But the flood of special interest money into our American democracy is one of the greatest threats our system of government has ever faced. Let’s keep our elections from becoming speculative ventures for the wealthy and put a stop to the hostile takeover of our democratic system by a couple of billionaire oil barons.

Reid, who is no stranger to big-money politics, may find that his plan will have unintended consequences. As HotAir points out, Reid forgets to mention Democrat backer billionaire Tom Steyer as he is too busy with his war against the Kochs.

The hearings will most likely begin in June. However, it is unlikely Reid's amendment will garner the votes necessary to pass it from both chambers of Congress. But he marches on.

There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty.
Public virtue cannot exist in a nation without private, and public virtue is the only foundation of republics. There must be a positive passion for the public good, the public interest, honour, power and glory, established in the minds of the people, or there can be no republican government, nor any real liberty: and this public passion must be superior to all private passions. Legislation targeting individual citizens as criminals.

Go ahead, Senator. Introduce such a bill. What you will be doing is what the Constitution refers to as a bill of attainder. It is not legal, and if the Senator insists on introducing such a bill, he will have committed a (theoretically) impeachable offense.
