Quote
The ice cream truck jingle is the sound of innocent childhood summers and also the melody to the most racist song in the history of the United States.

Still to this day the familiar tune is responsible for setting off frenzied excitement among children across the country.

Popularly known as the 19th century standard 'Turkey in the Straw', the song in fact owes its roots to minstrel song's including the offensively titled, 'N***** Love a Watermelon Ha! Ha! Ha!'

It's music. No words. Without racist words it can not express racist sentiments. It's just a tune.

Just sitting here with my banjo in my lap playing that tune, right now.

Not a joke, I -really am- doing that.

No apologies, big smile on my face!

Yes, and Ring Around the Rosie mocked a person with the plague.  Are we to feel guilt over that one too?

Nobody'd better find out what the song sung at the Kentucky Derby had as its original words.

Good grief.

Turkey in the Straw is a fiddle tune now.  Nothing more.

Idiots.
Character still matters.  It always matters.

I wear a mask as an exercise in liberty and love for others.  To see it as an infringement of liberty is to entirely miss the point.  Be kind.

  • Cats rule. Dogs drool.
Don't think I have ever heard an ice cream truck play it. Teddy Bear's Picnic seems to be by far the most popular.
