Climate change affecting every region of US, new WH report finds

By Laura Barron-Lopez - 05/06/14 09:08 AM EDT

A new White House report released Tuesday concludes that human-generated climate change is having dramatic effects on every part of the nation.

The National Climate Assessment, which the administration touted as the most comprehensive look yet at global warming in the U.S., concludes that climate change is raising temperatures, making water more scarce and wildfires more common.

It said climate change has “moved firmly into the present” for the U.S., underscoring the need for urgent action to combat threats.

“Americans are noticing changes all around them,” the report states. “Summer are longer and hotter, and extended periods of unusual heat last longer than any living American has ever experienced. Winters are generally shorter and warmer.”

The report adds that coastal residents are seeing “more dramatic” changes with the increase of flooding.

“Observations unequivocally show that climate is changing and that the warming of the past 50 years is primarily due to human-induced emissions of heat trapping gases,” the report states.

President Obama, who has made combatting climate change a central part of his second term, plans extensive outreach on Tuesday to spread the findings of the report.

Obama plans to conduct one-on-one interviews with national and local TV meteorologists Tuesday, in what some have called a new strategy for the administration to communicate his climate agenda.

Obama's administration is pursuing new rules on carbon-emitting coal-powered plants as part of an effort to tackle climate change. The administration also recently punted a decision on building the Keystone XL pipeline, which environmental groups argue would significantly add to climate change.

Skeptics called the report another “scare tactic” by the administration. Many contend there is far from a consensus among U.S. scientists that the globe is in fact warming, arguing that the temperature changes have continually occurred throughout the last century.

“Facing a recovering, yet fragile, economy, with families across the country struggling to make ends meet, it is concerning that the Obama Administration is busy promoting its politically driven climate change agenda, instead of addressing the real issues plaguing our nation,” said Laura Sheehan, of the American Coalition for Clean Coal.

Critics of the Obama’s climate agenda argue that rather than pressing action on cutting emissions overseas, the administration should visit U.S. communities being impacted by the “costly regulations” on power plants it is working to finalize.

The highly publicized report comes on the heels of the United Nations global climate change report, which offered similar conclusions for the planet.

The new report includes research and evidence from 13 federal agencies. It found the average temperature in the U.S. has increased by 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit, coming in at 1.9 degrees Fahrenheit since 1895.

A majority of that increase took place since 1970, the report states. And the most recent decade was the nation’s hottest on record, with 2012 being the hottest year on record in the U.S.

The change in climate in the last 50 years, the report concludes, is a result of human activities, mainly from the burning of fossil-fuel energy sources.

The report breaks the U.S. into seven regions, detailing specific climate changes in each.

It said climate change is leading to drought in the Southwest, greater heat waves and precipitation in the Northeast, and lower crop yields as a result of rising carbon dioxide in the Midwest.

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) railed against the administration’s new report and the timing of its release, which he said was “conveniently” released the week the Senate will debate the approval of the Keystone pipeline.

Orwellian.

This is how it started with the war on women. I thought it was stupid, and couldn't believe they were wasting their time on it. Before it was over, the war on women was a huge winner for Democrats with lots of women buying in.

The Democrats are expert at finding things that resonate with the chronically distracted, totally uninterested American voter. This could be the issue that the Dems and their media use to save themselves in November.

I'm not so sure that this particular is one that they hope to milk for November as much as the one that are hoping can be used to destroy what's remaining of this country's economy and the American lifestyle in general.

Well, that's certainly part of the deal. A nice bonus, if you will.
But, if they can gin up the LIVs on climate change, it crowds out talk of Benghazi or obamacare. Dems are expert at breaking things down so LIVs don't have to struggle to understand.

It's so frightening to me that so many people are so gullible that they will fall for these shameless lies from the left.

The success of the "war on women" in the Democrat campaign is one of the things that make me feel that there is no hope for America.

When everyone is reeling from a  brutally cold winter, it is scary that there will be many otherwise intelligent people who will indeed fall for this extraordinary lie.

Yes, you are correct.  Not sure if they had this crap planned for today in advance, but they certainly are hoping that it can drive that dang Ben Ghazi guy out of the news cycle!!

It's just another illustration of how powerful the media is in America. Americans will ignore what they see, in favor of a conflicting account from the media.

It has been well documented that temperature measurements have been artificially inflated by placing thermostats near airports (massive heat sinks of asphalt and concrete), and by the growth of urban areas during the past 100 years, which creates artificial "heat islands".

It has also been documented that politically-motivated "scientists" at NWS acted to reduce temperature data from the early 20th century in order to create the illusion of a current "warming" trend.  There has been no measurable warming of atmospheric or ground temperatures in the United States for over 17 years now. Anyone who says differently is either misinformed, or lying.

Yes, that is what I find so Orwellian about it all, it is all a LIE of massive proportions.  And now we've devolved to the point where the calls to shun, punish, or even imprison "deniers" are gaining momentum.

Here is the one point that nobody seems to be hammering on, but which is the weakest link in the argument:  there is precious little evidence, let alone proof, that any sort of global warming aka climate change is caused by people.  Why is that important?  Because if we aren't the cause then changing our activities to affect the cause is pointless, a mindless exercise in wasting valuable resources and making people miserable.

And it is precisely that linkage that every liberal screed about climate change/global warming elides over.  If republicans/conservatives/people with half a brain started insisting on proof for that causal connection, the climate change juggernaut fails.  Why?  Because there ain't much if any such evidence at all.  The only real "evidence" the global warming/climate change cultists ever had was the so-called hockey-stick chart showing that the global mean temperature started spiking right about the time the industrial revolution kicked off.  That "evidence" however, has been fully discredited as a fraud manufactured by the global warming/climate change cult.  (Keeping in mind that even that chart was very weak evidence because even if it were 100% true all it would show is a mere correlation, and as everyone with half a brain, or more, should know, correlation is not causation).

As a simple matter, the argument that we have to change the way we live our lives because we're driving climate change would go like this:

Global climate change is occurring --> human activities are causing global climate change --> therefore, changing human activities will affect global climate change.

Here, schematically, is the argument democrats/liberals make:  global climate change is occurring --> therefore, changing human activities will affect global climate change.

Notice how the crucial linkage is missing?  That is where the hammer blows should be aimed.  Demand that the democrats/liberals provide irrefutable proof of the causal connection before agreeing to go along with their world-altering plans.

Either no one in the Republican side of the political class is that smart, or perhaps, they don't really care to take on the Democrats?

No one in the media would ask such questions.

Global warming looks to be a prime issue for November.

It doesn't have to just be some politician who raises it; the grassroots can start demanding of each and every democrat that he or she prove the linkage.  The problem is that too many people spend way too much time, energy, and political capital trying to argue that climate change isn't happening, which is a losing proposition even if the global warming/climate change cultists are wrong about the causal connection.  Why a loser?  Because the climate is always changing; it's changed, sometimes dramatically, in the past, well before any human industrial activity arose, and it will continue to do so until the Sun expands into a Red Giant and consumes the Earth.

Agreed. Town Halls are perfect opportunities to ask such questions.

What proves human causation of warming?
Why is our current climate the normal?
What caused the ice ages?
What caused the warming after the ice ages?
What good will it do if America changes but Russia, China and India do not?

I agree that it is a great post.  It uses a logic-based, rational argument to cut to the heart of this lie.  But, I don't think that I am alone in recognizing that a logic-based, rational argument has very little currency in our world today.  I've watched "debates" on TV about this very point, and it is always just waved away with some hollow talking points about "man's impact has been proven by hundreds of studies" or something like "almost 97% of the world's top scientists agree that man has an impact" which are never really allowed to be challenged.  In most cases the host or "moderator" has no interest in getting to the truth of the matter either.

And beyond that, we have a very foolish population in this country (what is the exact percentage of the whole, I don't know, but it seems to be over 50%) that WANTS to believe in these lies.  (Of course, I doubt that they have any idea as to the drastic consequences that will soon be wrought on our economy and entire lifestyle by their blind support of the lie.)  There are two main reasons, in my opinion, for this blind support (and they happen to be the two basic reasons that a whole host of over harmful (and even evil) agendas are supported:

1.  Propaganda and brain-washing: In this case people have been brain-washed for decades (starting in elementary schools) that essentially: "man has been evil, man has harmed Mother Earth, man has made animals suffer and destroyed plant life, man is too greedy (especially Western man) and their pursuit of profit and comfort has led to wide scale destruction of our planet, ...." and on and on and on.  This meme has been pounded into people's heads since they are 5 or 6 years old and it hasn't abated.

2.  Front-running: Using the term popular in sporting circles, the simple fact is that a LOT of people want to "back the winner" or "be a part of the winning team!"  (Heck we even hear about people actually voting for president based solely on who the latest polls tell them will win!  yes, it is that bad.)  A lot of people are very insecure and do not have very well developed critical thinking skills (since they've been deliberately removed from public education over the decades), they don't really have a lot of faith in themselves that they can actually think about something and develop their own conclusions.  So, by default, they will clamor to grab a hold of what ever opinion or side of an issue that they see a majority taking.  If they hear a lot of "yeah, we have to save the planet" and "we need to stop using that filthy oil and coal" everyday around the lunch table or water cooler, they will naturally attach themselves to this majority point of view.  (Additionally, human nature often pushes one to want to be accepted by others, they want to "get along" and not argue.  So there you have it, it is just so much easier and soothing to just go along with what you determine is the "popular" point of view.)

Is this a scathing and cynical commentary on a large swath of the US population?  Yes.  But I don't think that it is too far from being on the mark.  And, as I said, you can see it play out all of the time regarding other issues as well, it isn't limited to the AGW "debate."

(Oh, and aside from the reasons above, as was pointed out earlier today, just glomming onto whatever opinion everyone else has leaves a LOT more time to head to the mall and update Facebook!!)

Environmentalism springs from legitimate concerns.

In the 70s our rivers and lakes were filthy, it was manmade. And we cleaned it up.

Our skies were dirty, and we have made great progress cleaning that up, too.

In cases like this, business interests, usually represented by conservatives, resisted the cleanups.

My city has ten miles of coastline, and liberals are joined by many conservatives wishing to keep it cleaner.

So like it or not, resisting global warming starts with two strikes against it--being associated with pollution deniers of the past.

Plus the environmentalists have big organizations, like Surfrider, Sierra Club, etc.

Efforts to oppose global warming proponents are limited to industry specific ones, such as the coal industry.

Environmentalism is an attractive, easily marketed and sold brand. Opposing it is very difficult to make as attractive.

True, but like so many springs, it has dried up and become some sort of morphed gulch.

Of course it is, but going after the weak link doesn't require that one take an anti-environmental position.  For example, I really care about the environment, and I want to preserve it as much as anyone else, but in order to do that we have to know exactly what we're dealing with, why it got the way it is, and what course of action would actually be effective and not simply a waste of the very limited resources we have for protecting the environment.  To that end, I would like to see definitive proof that the human activities being attacked are, in fact, responsible for climate change.  Without such proof we have no way of knowing if we're even going after the real cause, or if we're just spinning our wheels and wasting time while the environment continues to deteriorate.  People are proposing that we spend vast sums of money and upend our economy and society in order to address climate change, but if we don't know that our current activities are the cause of climate change, then all of that money and all of that disruption will have been wasted while the problem is still there and has probably gotten even worse.

Your response is a good illustration of why it is difficult. No wonder conservatism often starts with one foot in its mouth, and the other leg cut out from under themselves.

You put words in my mouth, tried to change the subject, and turn it into a fight with me. And I am on the same side with you.

Instead of "extending your line of thought" why not deal with specifics?

Successful private enterprise companies have to shoulder the whole load. They admit mistakes of the past, and show how they are part of the solution going forward. Auto, petroleum, coal and electric power generating industries, for examples.

IOW they generate imagery of modern industries in America and abroad, dealing with environmental concerns.

And the companies tie themselves to the people they employ, the benefits of the products they supply.

The whole thread was about specifics until you came in with your whiney crap about conservatives fouling the planet. Conservatives have been so guilty, that we don't have a good platform to fight this... blah, blah, blah. From my perspective, you were the one looking for a fight. You took your shot at conservatives, and waited to see who'd bite. When I took the bait, and pointed out the flaw in your thinking, you played the victim.

Feel free to aimlessly take shots at conservatives. I'll be here, I won't run.
