Sens. John McCain (R-AZ), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) wrote to Obama Friday to ask him simply: Where were you during the Benghazi attack?
They referenced ex-National Security Council (NSC) spokesman Tommy Vietor’s appearance on the Fox News Channel Thursday evening, when Vietor said on national television that President Obama was not in the Situation Room at the White House during the Benghazi attack. The reason Vietor said he knew Obama wasn’t in the situation room was that he himself was there.
“Last night, the former Communications Director for the National Security Council, Tommy Vietor, stated that on the afternoon and night of September 11, 2012 – while the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya was under attack – that you never visited the White House Situation Room to monitor events,” McCain, Graham, and Ayotte wrote to Obama on Friday.
“Over a year and a half has passed since the terrorist attacks, and the American people still do not have an accounting of your activities during the attack. Mr. President, can you now confirm that Mr. Vietor’s account of your absence in the White House Situation Room is accurate?”
The three foreign policy hawks’ letter comes as new emails surfaced this week via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from conservative group Judicial Watch which sparked a whole new wave of momentum on the Benghazi scandal and the creation of a select committee by the House of Representatives to investigate it.
