Mainstream media members, while covering Tuesday’s 6-2 Supreme Court decision affirming Michigan’s ban on affirmative action, concentrated their attention on the “passionate” dissent by liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

The ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts all referred to the “passionate” or “impassioned” dissent by Sotomayor, and liberal hosts like MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell and Ronan Farrow joined in the description, as did a variety of other pundits and commentators.  NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams amusingly referred to the 6-2 vote as “lopsided but deeply divided,” whatever that means.

The media just loves her passion.

Sotomayor, who has spoken openly of her support for the practice, wrote a 58-page summary of her disagreement with the majority opinion. Only fellow liberal Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined her in the minority, while Justice Elena Kagan recused herself due to her work on the case as U.S. solicitor general.
