Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus on Wednesday accused Senate majority leader Harry Reid of being “so dirty and so unethical” for using his taxpayer-funded office to launch political attacks against Republicans.
During an appearance on Fox and Friends, Priebus discussed how the the GOP has filed an ethics complaint against the Nevada Democrat to the Senate Select Committee on Ethics over the issue.
“Harry Reid is so dirty and so unethical that some of these things have to happen,” Priebus said on Fox and Friends. “You have to put a marker down and say, wait a second. You are not going to use a taxpayer web site and a taxpayer Twitter account to attack Republicans”
On Tuesday, Roger Villere, chairman of the Republican Party of Louisiana, sent a letter to the Senate Ethics Committee to complain about Reid’s “improper use of taxpayer resources for campaign purposes during the 2014 election cycle.”
The complaint specifically references Reid’s repeated attacks on the billionaire Koch Brothers, who have contributed money to conservative groups that are targeting vulnerable Democrats. Republicans said it was inappropriate for Reid’s office to launch attacks from his official website and Twitter account, which are paid for by taxpayers.
“He doesn’t use a separate web site and a separate Twitter account for these attacks,” Priebus said Wednesday. “So he’s clearly using staff, taxpayer money, resources, a website, and computer equipment to launch partisan campaign attacks on the taxpayers’ money.”
