Union-supporting Media Matters for America is fighting a move by its employees to organize.
The Service Employees International Union filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board last week charging that Media Matters stopped a move to unionize its workers, according to The Washington Examiner.
"We respect the rights of our employees and will work through this process," Media Matters told Gawker.
The liberal media watchdog group, which started in 2004 with the financial assistance of sources tied to the Democratic Party, has long supported the cause of unionization.
"Right-wing media outlets who have long engaged in a campaign to demonize organized labor may be contributing to economic inequality as economists point to declining union participation as one cause of the growing economic rift in America," reads one story posted to its website earlier this year.
"Unions and union workers have been a consistent target for right-wing media figures who have attacked organized labor as a leech on society and destroyer of jobs."
Media Matters makes a habit out of bashing what it calls the right-wing media.
In March, Media Matters published a story titled "Myths and Facts: Unions and Organized Labor." In the story, the organization slams "conservative media figures," saying they are "demonizing labor unions in the process."
"According to a Center for American Progress fact sheet titled 'Unions Are Good for the American Economy,' unions have been shown to raise economic demand by increasing workers' wages and buying power," the story reads. "The fact sheet also noted that the benefits of unionization spread beyond members, causing non-union employers to match union wages."
In another section of the article, a subheadline reads, "Unions increase productivity, do not reduce business competitiveness."
According to the Examiner, Media Matters has hired Perkins Coie, a law firm that specializes in labor disputes.
