The National Republican Senatorial Committee raised $6.35 million in March, a sizeable haul that comes amid rising GOP confidence about the possibility of a Senate takeover.

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, the NRSC’s fundraising chairman, told his GOP colleagues during their Tuesday afternoon lunch that the committee now has $15.9 million cash on hand and no debt.

This is the NRSC’s best month yet of the cycle.

“Another record month shows that we are building momentum and that Republicans across the country are highly energized,” Portman said.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has not yet announced its March number, but fundraisers with President Barack Obama should also give it a big haul.

The DSCC, which controls the Senate majority, raised $6.8 million in February and outraised the NRSC by $16 million last year, when the GOP suffered from severe donor fatigue in the wake of losses in 2012.

But top Republicans say donors have begun to open their wallets again, and Portman noted that the NRSC raised $16.45 million during the first quarter of 2014.

The GOP needs to net six seats in the midterms this fall to gain control of the Senate.

“Thanks to the strong financial support of thousands of people and my GOP colleagues, great candidates across the map, and an optimistic agenda, Republicans are one step closer to bringing back the Senate this fall, but there is still work to be done,” Portman said.
