O’Reilly: If GOP Doesn’t Compromise on Immigration, ‘Say Hello to President Hillary Clinton’ in 2016

Bill O’Reilly weighed in on immigration reform in tonight’s Talking Points Memo, arguing that a hard-line stance by the GOP will help Democrats.

Over the weekend, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who is mulling a presidential run, said that people who come to the U.S. illegally do it as “an act of love.” House Speaker John Boehner then commented on those remarks on The Kelly File, saying that he understood what Bush was saying, but that “we’re also a nation of laws, and for those who are here without documents, they’re gonna have to face the law at some point.”

O’Reilly said that Bush is right – some illegal immigrants come here out of desperation to feed their families, so compassion must be in play. O'Reilly said some illegals, however, are bad and should be thrown out of the country.

“The Republican Party must compromise on the immigration issue or it will lose the presidency again in 2016,” O’Reilly said. He noted that Mitt Romney only got 27 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2012.

“If that happens again, you can say hello to President Hillary Clinton,” he said.

O’Reilly said that Bush and other moderate Republicans recognize that Latinos must be courted to some extent.

“But it’s not all political,” he said. “The USA should be a nation that understands oppression… This country has always welcomed good people from other countries, but it must be done in a lawful way.”

O’Reilly outlined a “sane immigration plan” that calls for all of the country’s illegal immigrants to register with the federal government within six months or be detained. He said borders must be upgraded so that illegal entry becomes extremely difficult, and illegal aliens must pay a fine and apply for citizenship without preferential status.



O’Reilly said those illegal immigrants must learn English, pay taxes, and do without welfare, but would be given the right to work. And once reform is put in place, O’Reilly said that no illegal immigrants should ever again be put on a path to citizenship.

If the GOP gets behind that, O’Reilly said that the party will be able to compete in 2016.

So far, the GOP is engineering a bullet train to an impending crash and merge with the Democrat Party.  There are so little differences now as to be almost nil.  Why should anyone vote for them, when they can get almost the same thing with the current party in power?

Not compromise.  Take the lead.  If the GOP does not take the lead on immigration reform two things will happen:  (1) we will get immigration reform crafted solely by the democrats, with no input from the GOP, and (2) the GOP will suffer significant election losses, both this year and in 2016.

Compromising with the Democrats always is done so with ill intent by the Dems. It will always come back to bight the Republicans leading up to elections and it is designed that way to do so.    They need to approach this with a clear difference  between the Democrat’s plan and the Republican’s plan for how to solve the illegal immigration issue.   And it needs to be practical, achievable, and make sense to the average voter. 

Nobody is going to round up and throw out 25 million people we all know that. That would be political suicide.  A sensible plan  comes down to securing the border.  Find out who is already here and why.  Then triage those not here legally in an A, B, or C status.

A)   Those who are contributing to society. Gainfully employed and are staying out of trouble.

B)   Those who are a drain on society.  Welfare, homeless shelters, medicaid, etc. But otherwise not part of the criminal element or the mentally ill.

C)   And those that are part of the criminal element or mentally ill.
 
By paying a fine, and following the path to citizenship just like other immigrants the “As” can be on the road to becoming a citizen. The #2s who are on the government teat will have a time limit where they must be gainfully employed and not on public assistance, moving themselves to the “A” list . If they cannot do this within the time frame they will be deported.  And the “C”s they are deported without question. If they are serving time in prison, the sentence must be completed.

If the GOP -does- "take the lead" on immigration reform, these things will happen:
(1) We will get immigration "reform" that is substantially no different than that we would get under the democrats, and
(2) The GOP sill suffer significant election losses, perhaps not in this year, but in nearly every election of consequence afterwards.

I just get tired at the Republican candidates lame answers to this immigration question every time they get asked it during the debates.   Of course the question is meant to entrap them so they always come back with a meaningless milquetoast reply so they don’t make conservatives angry, nor chase away the swing voters and Latinos.   My triage approach may not be the perfect solution but it’s something, and it only took me maybe 10 minutes to list what I would do.   You think the GOP can do something similar and come up with a solid solution and put it into their platform.  And then have the  candidates become well versed in communicating it.
