Exercise, and not colorful marshmallow Peeps, will be the focus of the 136th Annual White House Easter Egg Roll on April 21, the sixth year in a row that first lady Michelle Obama's fitness-first goal for kids has taken over the once sugar-filled event on the South Lawn.
“The day's activities will encourage children to lead healthy, active lives in support of the first lady's Let's Move! initiative,” said the White House of their sixth roll, titled “Hop into Healthy, Swing into Shape.”
In the past, administrations have given differing themes for the annual Easter Egg Roll. Former President George W. Bush, for example, used his 2007 event to promote physical fitness, but other years were themed for volunteering, the environment and other educational issues.
The Obamas, however have turned all of theirs over to fitness, one of the first lady’s chief passions. She officially made it a top agenda item in 2010 when she kicked off “Let’s Move!” Over those years, government reports have indicated that childhood obesity has dropped and supporters have given the first lady some of the credit for focusing on fitness and healthy diet.
Past Obama Easter Egg Roll themes:
2013: Be Healthy, Be Active, Be You!
2012: Let's Go, Let's Play, Let's Move
2011: Get Up and Go!
2010: Ready, Set, Go!
2009: Let's Go Play
