Liberal Actor Learns that Socialism Leads to Tyranny

By Onan Coca   / 8 April 2014   / 79 Comments

Kevin Spacey has never been one to side with conservatives. From his cozy relationship with dictators to his choice of roles, he’s cemented himself as a liberal scion of the film industry. Recently, however, he seems to have run afoul of his own socialist ideals. First, his hit show House of Cards was fighting with Maryland for tax breaks. Now, he’s turned his back on the socialist paradise he once so admired. He recently wrote some scathing commentary hitting the government of Venezuela for their cruel treatment of the people of Venezuela.

These students were standing for basic human freedoms and engaging in the right to protest, which is a sacred right whether in Boston, Belarus, or Venezuela. The government of Venezuela responded with heavy-handed repression…

spacey y hugoMore than 1,400 students were arrested, there are more than 40 confirmed cases of torture and Leopoldo Lopez still sits in a Venezuelan military prison...

Human Rights Watch says “the Venezuelan government has openly embraced the classic tactics of an authoritarian regime: jailing its opponents, muzzling the media and intimidating civil society.”

I support all of the Venezuelans who peacefully and non-violently claim their right to self-determination and protest…

We who are fortunate enough to live in freedom must stand up to oppression and injustice and remind the Venezuelan people that they are on the right side of history…

We agree wholeheartedly, Mr. Spacey! Venezuela and Russia have both dealt unjustly and too harshly with the people under their charge (as have many other nations in the world). The good citizens of Venezuela have every right to agitate for their freedoms, and the nation of Venezuela is wrong for their violent suppression of these peaceful protests.

Sadly, Mr. Spacey misses the fact that Venezuela (and for that matter Cuba, China and Russia) is simply the product of socialist policies. Under socialism the majority is of the utmost importance, and the minority views, beliefs, values and culture must be subjugated. Otherwise, socialism cannot work. We see this playing out in the assault of “political correctness” on the cherished values of the conservative community. Our beliefs and values must be crushed if socialism is expected to take hold and mature. Socialism cannot survive a fervent dissent, so it cannot abide dissent within its borders.

"Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim tribute to patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness -- these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. . . . reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principles."
George Washington

"Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters."
Benjamin Franklin
