ERIC LACH – APRIL 3, 2014, 1:50 PM EDT778
The man identified as the gunman in Wednesday's mass shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas purchased his gun from the same store where Major Nidal Hasan purchased a gun he used when he killed 13 people at the base in 2009, according to reports.

Law enforcement officials told CNN that Wednesday's shooter, who has been identified in media reports as Ivan Lopez, passed a background check when he bought a .45-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun at Guns Galore, a store in Killeen, Texas. In 2009, ABC News reported that Hasan purchased a FN Herstal Five-seveN tactical pistol from the same store in August of that year.

Army officials have said the handgun used by Lopez was not registered with the base. Lopez killed three people and wounded 16 on Wednesday before taking his own life.

Reached by phone on Thursday, Guns Galore employee Greg Ebert said questions about Lopez needed to go to the FBI.

"I'm not discussing yes, no, or otherwise," Ebert told TPM, when asked to confirm reports that Lopez had bought a gun at the store.

The FBI referred question to the Army. An Army spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment from TPM.

Guns Galore also had a role in a thwarted plot that targeted military personnel several years ago. In July 2011, the store tipped police to a "suspicious male" who purchased gunpowder, shotgun ammunition, and a magazine for a semiautomatic handgun, leading to the arrest of Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo, CNN reported at the time. Abdo then told investigators he wanted to attack fellow soldiers at Fort Hood.

Too late for the truth, that Genie is out of the bottle. This story fuels at least a week of “are we doing enough for soldiers with PTSD” stories, and at least 2 weeks of anti gun crap.

Yet we still haven't learned his hometown, his rank, his military occupational specialty, his length of service, his previous disciplinary problems if any, etc.

Most people that perpetrate mass shootings, military and civilian, are mentally "off."

Detecting them and preventing such tragedies is worthy of a high priority, but don't expect very much by way of results.

Not very news worthy news.   Ft Hood is in an area all by itself, not much around except the base.
You've got Killeen, Copperas Cove, and Harker Heights.  A majority of which are military families (either active duty or retired)

It's like saying they bought their car from the same dealership.

I like the way you think.

You noticed that the gun shop's role in preventing an attack is attached on as an after-thought? Well below the 100 word limit.

I really wonder who actually publicized it.

The prevention note was sort of like "by the way"...

It was also sneaky. The vast majority of people who click on a news story simply will not scroll down. It's a well known phenomenon in internet publishing, and why most articles on the various sites you enjoy are limited to a couple hundred words, tops. Many just read the lede and move on. It is a frighteningly good way of setting the tone of a discussion.

This smells hard of the gun control lot letting it out.

Have seen articles that had nothing to do with the actual headline.  And you're right, many don't even bother reading anything but that, maybe the first paragraph.  The funny thing is they then consider themselves "informed".

It should be remembered, the private information your give your gun store is not so private.
