Detroit Sees Increase in Self-Defense Shootings and Decrease in Criminal Homicides

Posted By Philip Hodges on Apr 1, 2014 | 0 Comments

Detroit’s new police chief made headlines when he asserted his support for the 2nd Amendment. He argued that there are many cases where citizens don’t have time to call 911 and wait for a cop to show up; that in those cases, those citizens need to be armed for their own protection and make those split-second decisions themselves. He warned violent criminals to watch out for residents who have had all they can take.

Already it appears that this police chief is seeing the fruit of his advice to residents and warnings to would-be criminals. The New American reported on one recent self-defense case in Detroit:

On Tuesday morning, March 25, two young men trying to break into a home on Detroit’s west side woke the homeowner, who went outside to investigate. The confrontation led to a fight, during which the homeowner drew his sidearm in self-defense and killed both attackers. This brings to 10 the number of fatal self-defense shootings in Detroit so far this year, which could certainly exceed the total of 25 recorded in the city for 2012, the latest year for which data are available.

Meanwhile, as justifiable homicides are on the rise in Detroit, violent crime correspondingly continues to decline — just as new Police Chief James Craig noted back in January. At a press conference following the most recent self-defense shooting, he stated:

“It does appear that more and more Detroiters are becoming empowered. More and more Detroiters are getting sick of the violence. I know of no other place where I’ve see this number of justifiable homicides. People who are faced with a dangerous situation are taking matters into their own hands. We’re not advocating violence; we’re advocates of not being victims. We’re advocates of self-protection. We want people to be safe. This should be a message to those who continue to perpetuate violence on Detroiters that enough is enough…. Detroiters are fed up and they are taking action.”

Earlier this year, Craig announced that criminal homicides had dropped 14% and violent crime had dropped 7%.

If you absolutely must live in a city like Detroit, the only way to combat violence is to arm yourself with a gun. Don’t support politicians who want to take everyone’s guns away. That’ll only make the problem worse for you and better for the criminal.

Considering this is Detroit, and that this comment came from the chief of police, it's quite remarkable.

Will we see more of this in other cities that come to "the end of the line", which Detroit has already reached?
