I saw this story and my first thought is "Why did the authorities tip their hand?".  If he's coming into the recruiting office to take his oath, his induction, his transport to Basic and receiving, why scare him off?  There were many points along the way slap him in chains.
Why?  Well, because I'm a bastard, that's why.

More to the point, why discharge him? In general, military justice is fairer in hearing, harsher in sentencing and more rigorous in prison than civil justice.

This story smells - badly.
