NewsCorp chief hits WaPo's 'high priests'

NewsCorp Chief Executive Robert Thomson hit The Washington Post as "high priests" who had failed to embrace digital, The Guardian reports.

Speaking at an Adweek Europe session in London on Monday, Thomson said the Post's new owner Jeff Bezos will have clever ways of extending their reach, but he'll have to work around a stodgy newsroom culture.

"That will be the real challenge for [Bezos]. To listen to the sometimes lugubrious Bob Woodward tell you how lucky you are to have them is very different to making the most of a newsroom full of individuals who think they have a role as high priests," he said.

Thomson added that the Post's journalists "haven't understood that we are in a different moment in history."

"If you think your role is sacred, how can you undermine your sacredness other than by doing something different?" he said. "For so many U.S. newspapers that have imploded that has been the fundamental question. And for Jeff that is a tricky one."
