SFO stowaway Marilyn Hartman busted yet again

Marilyn Hartman, the 62-year-old woman busted three times for trying to sneak onto a plane at San Francisco International Airport — and arrested another time for hanging around the food court — is back in custody yet again.

About 4 p.m. Wednesday, San Francisco airport police officers spotted Hartman at baggage claim in Terminal 3, said Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt, a spokeswoman for the San Mateo County sheriff’s office.

Police determined that she hadn’t tried to board a flight or get through a security checkpoint.  But Hartman was in violation of a court order barring her from being at the airport unless she was lawfully ticketed to fly, authorities said.  There was no evidence that she had just arrived on a plane, Rosenblatt said.

Hartman was booked at County Jail in Redwood City on suspicion of violating a court order and trespassing.

She first came to the attention of authorities on Feb. 15, when she somehow got through a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint and found her way onto an airplane bound for Hawaii.  But she was caught “when the actual seat holder arrived,” said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Three days later, Hartman returned to SFO but was caught at the security gate.  On her third attempt, on Feb. 20, she had a discarded boarding pass in her possession, Wagstaffe said.

During the first two attempts to get through, she was interviewed and told to leave the airport.  But she was arrested the third time around.  She has claimed that she has cancer and wanted to go somewhere warm, but her motives can’t be corroborated, Wagstaffe said.

Late last month, she pleaded no contest to two counts of misdemeanor commercial burglary, was given time served for eight days in jail and ordered to stay away from the airport unless she was traveling.  Despite that admonition, she was spotted at the International Terminal’s A-side food court on March 18 and arrested.

It seems pretty obvious that she has "issues". Isn't there anything we can do these days to help people who are having problems? Time in jail isn't going to help.
