South Carolina Minister Takes on Sen. Lindsey Graham

A South Carolina preacher is swapping the pulpit for politics — and has thrown his hat in the ring against incumbent Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Det Bowers, the former pastor of the Christ Church of the Carolinas, formally announced  Tuesday that he is out to unseat Graham, The State newspaper reported.

The 61-year-old married father of three is the seventh Republican to enter the race to represent the Palmetto State on Capitol Hill.

Others include state Sen. Lee Bright, businessman Richard Cash, attorneys Bill Connor and Benjamin Dunn, public relations executive Nancy Mace, and retired police officer Dave Feliciano.

Bowers, The State reported, told reporters the 1775 shot "heard 'round the world" must be repeated "so loudly that we repeal the Affordable Care Act, that we balance budgets and debt ceilings, that regulations that are strangling small businesses be done away with, because you can’t have jobs without profitable businesses.

"America is the envy of all the nations. They want your vaccinations. They want your education. They want your jurisprudence ... your matchless Constitution ... your precious freedoms."

Former South Carolina GOP Chairman Barry Wynn said Bowers can present a serious challenge to Graham.

Bowers is an "interesting candidate, and you have to list him as somebody who has some credibility," Wynn told The State. "He makes it more likely that you might have a runoff."
