Former New Jersey governor’s son kills self in Mexico City hotel

The son of former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine killed himself in a Mexico City hotel, sources told The Post on Thursday.

Jeffrey Corzine, 31, was the youngest of Corzine’s three children with ex-wife and childhood sweetheart Joanne Corzine.

Sources said he had been depressed recently and was drinking heavily before the suicide, though the cause of death was not released.

His mom and other family members declined comment.

“Mr. Corzine is obviously devastated by this tragic loss,” said his spokesman, Steven Goldberg.

The younger Corzine had a history of substance-abuse problems and had been in and out of rehab, sources said. But he had been living in California and working as a drug counselor, and had appeared to have turned his life around, one source said.

Both of his parents had recently told friends that their son was clean.

“By all accounts, he was doing well,” a source said.

Jeffrey is survived by siblings Jennifer and Josh.

He had been living in a sunny, $2.8 million beachfront home in Malibu that his mom — who is remarried — helped him buy, records show.

It is unclear when or why he went to Mexico, but a source said Corzine had seemed depressed and had been drinking.

Corzine was a troubled teen, according to sources close to the family, and his father sent him to Pomfret — a boarding school in Connecticut, in hopes of “giving him some direction.”

Despite a rocky relationship, Jeffrey and his father bonded after the elder Corzine’s near-fatal 2007 car crash — when the then-governor was badly injured in a speeding accident.

Jeffrey was a constant presence at his dad’s side during the pol’s 18-day stay at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

“After that, Jeff seemed to straighten up a lot and the two of them grew much closer,” said one source.

Jeffrey was an avid poker player, and in 2012 he beat out former Yahoo president Sue Decker for the title in billionaire Warren Buffett’s annual high-stakes poker tournament. He was also an artist and aspiring photographer, setting up the Web site jeffreycorzine.com several years ago.

On his Facebook page is a 2011 photo of him with President Obama.

The death of his youngest son is the latest in a series of challenges for scandal-scarred Jon Corzine, who was ousted from Goldman Sachs in 1999 and is now being sued by regulators over the 2011 collapse of MF Global Holdings Ltd., the commodities broker he headed after leaving public office.

31 Year Old Son Of Jon Corzine Reported Dead

He may not have been a banker or trader, but the just reported passing of one Jeffrey Corzine, 31, son of the infamous Jon Corzine will likely raise more eyebrows than all previous recently reported banker deaths combined.

According to the NY Post, Jeffrey Corzine, who friends said worked as a drug counselor in California, was just 31, when he passed.  Details of his death were not immediately known.

"Mr. Corzine is obviously devastated by this tragic loss,” said his spokesman, Steven Goldberg. “We ask that all respect his family’s privacy during this very difficult time."

He was a constant by his father’s side in the days after the former governor’s near-fatal car crash in 2007.

The youngest of the former politician’s three children with ex-wife Joanne Corzine, Jeff also had launched a fledgling photography website. The photography site, which features photos of walls, nature, and various semi-nude women, can be found here.

And now let the conspiracy theories surrounding the death of the young Corzine begin.

Corzine defrauded many people, and I'm sure more than a few of them weren't the people you want to defraud.  Hmm...

It's probably not unreasonable to have some suspicions, given the sleazeball father's history and the possibility some of his victims weren't very nice or patient people.

Judge Rules Suit Against Corzine Can Move Ahead
Parts of Suit Dismissed, Including Claims Against PricewaterhouseCoopers

By Jacqueline Palank
Updated Feb. 11, 2014 5:14 p.m. ET

A federal judge allowed MF Global Holdings Ltd.'s commodity customers to move forward with a class-action lawsuit against former Chief Executive Jon Corzine and other officials, although the judge narrowed its scope.

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero did dismiss some claims against Mr. Corzine and others related to MF Global's collapse in 2011 and dismissed all of the customers' claims against PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, MF Global's former auditor.

Judge Marrero, who has previously compared MF Global's collapse and the wave of litigation it spawned to a "massive train wreck," wrote in his ruling on Tuesday that he had hoped those involved in litigation could resolve the matter "in a just and efficient way."

Instead, the judge wrote, "wasteful and rancorous litigation" will continue to unfold as customers await compensation.

Last month, Judge Marrero denied Mr. Corzine's request to dismiss a similar lawsuit brought against him by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. A spokesman for Mr. Corzine couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

MF Global filed for bankruptcy protection in October 2011, exposing a $1.6 billion shortfall in its brokerage customer accounts. According to the CFTC's lawsuit, that action violated federal laws requiring commodity futures brokers to keep customer funds separate and barring them from using the funds elsewhere.

In the class-action lawsuit, MF Global's former commodity customers blamed the shortfall on the allegedly "unlawful conduct" by Mr. Corzine and others. They said the firm's liquidity crisis was brought on by an "ill-conceived business model" devised by Mr. Corzine, the former governor of New Jersey. ...

No matter what you think of the man and his unethical politics, the suicide of a child is a horrible thing to go through.
Character still matters.  It always matters.

I wear a mask as an exercise in liberty and love for others.  To see it as an infringement of liberty is to entirely miss the point.  Be kind.

Hypothetically, even worse would be the murder of a child, knowing that your own criminal activity led directly to the death (allegedly).

It looks like a probable suicide. The young man had emotional and drug abuse issues.

Point well taken.
