I would hope that by now our National Security Agency has been able to re-direct certain orbital assets and is conducting a close search of the Indonesian Archipelago from orbit as we speak.  If this aircraft crashed, then there is debris to be seen somewhere, either on land or in a body of water.  At some point someone is going to find the wreckage.

But keep in mind that the area of the world where this happened is NOT the United States, and just like Malay airline pilots are some of the worst in the world, air traffic control in that entire region leaves a great deal to be desired.  It is just as likely that radar coverage was lost because the radar operator didn't know what he was doing as well as the pilot.  Accidents are the result of a chain of events, each event being one link in the chain.  Remove just one link and the accident cannot happen.  But if you have an extremely long chain......

Let the speculation of the day begin.....
