A wealthy Washington businessman embroiled in a campaign finance scandal communicated with a longtime adviser to Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton on an illegal canvassing effort to bolster Mrs. Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, according to court documents.

Minyon Moore, a Clinton aide and Democratic political operative, asked the businessman, Jeffrey E. Thompson, to make donations toward a get-out-the-vote initiative in several states and Puerto Rico during the contentious Democratic primaries. Details about the relationship came to light after Mr. Thompson pleaded guilty on Monday to charges that he and his companies had made $3.3 million in illegal campaign contributions to a wide range of candidates for elective office.

The documents did not name Ms. Moore, but referred to a “senior adviser to the campaign who worked for a public affairs firm.” There was no evidence that Mrs. Clinton was aware of the off-the-books campaign effort, federal prosecutors said.

The Washington Post first reported that the adviser mentioned in the documents was Ms. Moore, who served as a senior aide in the Clinton White House and as an adviser to Mrs. Clinton in her 2008 campaign. She currently works for the Dewey Square Group, a political consultancy, in Washington.
