Florida special election results: David Axelrod explains David Jolly victory

Former White House senior adviser David Alexrod said Wednesday that the lesson to take away from the special election in Florida’s 13th District is that problems with Obamacare motivated the Republican base and that Democrats need to figure out how to fire up theirs — minorities and young people.

The problems with Obamacare “motivated the Republican base,” helping carry David Jolly to a victory, Alexrod said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Axelrod noted that independents supported Alex Sink’s position on “mending, not ending” Obamacare by a large margin and that Democrats aren’t going to be able to walk away from that position.

“The notion that Democrats can just walk away from that position, that never ever works. So we’re going to have to fight it out on that issue,” he said.

But the “real challenge,” Axelrod said, is how do Democrats motivate base voters — young people and minorities — to participate in the midterm elections.

“We didn’t do it in 2010, if we don’t do it in 2014, it’s going to be a very difficult year,” he said.
