Gates: 'Tone down' Obama criticism
By KEVIN ROBILLARD |
3/9/14 9:53 AM EDT

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates says criticism of President Barack Obama's handling of the Ukraine crisis is misguided.

"Some of the criticism, domestic criticism of the president ought to be toned down while he's handling this crisis," Gates said on "Fox News Sunday." "My own view is, after all, [Vladimir] Putin invaded Georgia when George W. Bush was president. Nobody ever accused George W. Bush of being weak or being unwilling to use military force."

Republicans have claimed in recent weeks that Obama's failure to be "tough enough" with Putin and other international actors emboldened the Russian president, who has moved into Crimea and is preparing to it. Gates worked for both Obama and President George W. Bush as defense secretary.

"Even if we had launched attacks in Syria, even if we weren't cutting our defense budget, I think Putin saw an opportunity here in Crime, and he has seized it," Gates said.

Gates: Crimea is 'gone'
By KEVIN ROBILLARD |
3/9/14 9:36 AM EDT

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates predicts that Russia will continue to control Crimea for the foreseeable future.

"I do not believe that Crimea will slip out of Russia's hand," he said in an interview aired on "Fox News Sunday."

"You think Crimea's gone?" host Chris Wallace asked.

"I do," Gates replied.

Russia has bloodlessly seized control of Crimea over the past week and has moved to formally annex it. The Crimean parliament has scheduled a vote on whether to join Russia for next week.

"I think it's part of a long-term strategy on Putin's part to create a Russian sphere of influence, a Russian bloc," Gates said, adding later: "I don't think he will stop in Ukraine until there is essentially a pro-Russian government in Ukraine, in Kiev."

Gates said he supported efforts by Congress and the administration to increase sanctions on Russia.

"What we need to do is show Russia there are long-term consequences for their actions," he said. "Our tactical options are pretty limited."

Remember as you watch today!
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Gates: Defense cuts a 'serious mistake'
By KEVIN ROBILLARD |
3/9/14 10:04 AM EDT

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates continues to speak out against cuts in defense spending that could force the Navy to decommission an aircraft carrier and lead to the Army cutting an additional 30,000 troops.

"Cutting the defense budget in significant ways right now is a serious mistake," Gates said on "Fox News Sunday." "You know, when we've cut the budget before at the end of the Cold War, the end of Vietnam and at other times, it's been because we thought the world was going to be a safer place. At least we thought so temporarily at the time. No one can make that case right now."

Gates said rising tensions with Russia and in the South China Sea and ongoing threats from the nuclear programs of Iran and North Korea continued to present major threats to the U.S.

"These guys are operating on the 20th century model of nation-states," Gates said. "Boundaries matter, strategic interests matter, zero-sum game when you lose. This is the way these countries look at the world. It's different than the way the Europeans and we look at it. And frankly, the pace at which both the Europeans and the United States is cutting their defenses, regardless of what the facts on the ground in term of the number of ships and planes, it certainly sends a signal that we are not interested in protecting our global interests."

Cheney: Obama isn't considering military options
By KEVIN ROBILLARD |
3/9/14 11:18 AM EDT

Former Vice President Dick Cheney criticized President Barack Obama on Sunday for failing to consider military options while trying to handle the Ukrainian crisis.

"No military," Cheney said on CBS's "Face The Nation." "He seems to operate that way most of the time. There are military options that don't involve putting troops on the ground in Crimea. We could go back and reinstate the missile defense program that was taken out that was originally going to go in Poland, Czech Republic. Obama took it out to appease [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. We can do joint training exercises with Poland. We can offer military assistance and equipment to the Ukrainians themselves."

Cheney has been a blistering critic of the president, particularly on foreign policy issues, since leaving the vice presidency in 2009. Last March, the Obama administration announced the cancelation of a final stage of a European missile defense program that would've been based partially in Poland, saying the equipment was needed in Alaska to help prevent attacks from North Korea.

Gates just can't decide which side of the fence to straddle.
