Ted Cruz endorses John Cornyn

    By Sean Sullivan
    March 5 at 12:46 pm

He refused to endorse Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) during the primary, but once it was over, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) singled him out for congratulations.

"Congratulations to every Republican who won the primary last night. Three, in particular, deserve special mention," Cruz wrote Wednesday on Facebook, before mentioning Attorney General Greg Abbott (a candidate for governor), Cornyn, and George P. Bush (candidate for land commissioner).

"John is a friend, and a good man. He's earned considerable respect in the Senate. We have not agreed on everything, but we have agreed on the vast majority of issues. Together, we're a strong and effective team for Texas," Cruz wrote, later adding that he is "proud" to endorse Cornyn.

As Cornyn faced the threat of a tea party challenge in the summer, Cruz declined to endorse the second-ranking Senate Republican. It was seen as a kick in the teeth to Cornyn; not only does Cornyn represent the same state as Cruz, but Cruz is the vice chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, an incumbent protection organization.

Cornyn won the GOP nomination easily on Tuesday. Despite chatter in early 2013 that he might face a formidable tea party challenger, he faced only gadfly candidates. Politico reported that Cruz left Cornyn a congratulatory voice mail late Tuesday.

Cruz is staying out of contested Senate primaries featuring incumbents. But he made local endorsements in state-level races in Texas.

Ted Cruz said very clearly he was staying out of all the GOP primaries and would only endorse after the primary........ not sure why this is news he is doing what he said he would do.

It takes not a single ounce of courage to endorse someone who will get 60-70% of the vote in November.

He's covering his ass.

So Cruz is endorsing Thad Cochran now?

I don't hate Ted Cruz.  If he wanted to show courage, he would have endorsed Cornyn or one of his opponents.  Instead, he endorses the  winner.

Big whoop.

He's the Vice Chairman of the Republican Senatorial Committee. It is his job, in that role, to favor incumbents.

It's OK.  Cruz's lack of endorsement didn't hurt Cornyn one bit.

Frankly, I don't think there should be a RNSC or a RNCC.. or a DNSC or a DNCC and the RNC should stay out of primaries, too.

Which is a very sensible, politic, thing to do.  Sounds like he's definitely beginning to "grow up", no?

Nope. It is his job to increase the number of Republican Senators in the senate. Cornyn didn't need Cruz' endorsement, it's a seat that is going to go Repub regardless. It was up to the challengers to rock the boat enough to get rid of him. They failed to do so. Now Cornyn has the nom, Cruz is obliged to support him, just as he'll support the mildest RINO who gets a nom in a blue state.

Sen Cruz deserves recognition when he gets it right.  So Big Ups to Sen Cruz for putting his political muscle behind GOPe Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn.   This endorsement will probably push Cornyn over the top to beat Wendy.  Cornyn and Cruz Texas partners again.  We’ll raise up our glasses against evil forces Singing whiskey for my men, beer for my horses.

Yep.  It's politics, and it's nice to see Cruz getting back onboard with other conservative member of his party heading into the general election.  Party unification is what matters now.  He'll need to get on board for the next year or so, but if he actually helps lead a GOP majority toward his direction, then I'll be willing to accept him as a leader within the conservative moment, and not just a random wild card like Rand Paul and Rick Santorum.
