The Navy said that a military pilot was killed when the aircraft crashed during a training exercise in Western Nevada Saturday afternoon.

A statement released by the U.S. Pacific Fleet early Monday said that reports from the scene indicated that the F/A-18C aircraft was a "total loss."

It took rescue crews several hours to reach the site after the crash because of a snow storm and mountainous, remote terrain, Lt. Reagan Lauritzen said in a statement released earlier Sunday.

The U.S. Marine jet, which was on loan to the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center, went down on a Navy range training complex about 70 miles east of Naval Air Station Fallon, she said. The Navy reported incorrectly on Saturday that the jet was one of its Hornets.

The name of the pilot will be withheld until 24 hours following the notification of next of kin, in accordance with Defense Department policy.
