Kerry warns of 'profound' consequences for Russia

By Kyle Balluck

Secretary of State John Kerry late Saturday condemned Russia’s “invasion and occupation” of Ukrainian territory, calling it a threat to the peace and security of Ukraine and the wider region.

“Unless immediate and concrete steps are taken by Russia to deescalate tensions, the effect on U.S.-Russian relations and on Russia’s international standing will be profound,” Kerry said in a statement.

The upper house of Russia’s parliament on Saturday approved President Vladimir Putin’s request to authorize the use of military force, one day after Russian troops entered the Crimean peninsula.

Kerry said the U.S. recognizes and respects Russia’s ties to Ukraine and its concerns about the treatment of ethnic Russians.

“But these concerns can and must be addressed in a way that does not violate Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, by directly engaging the Government of Ukraine,” he said.

“I spoke with President Turchynov [Saturday] morning to assure him he had the strong support of the United States and commend the new government for showing the utmost restraint in the face of the clear and present danger to the integrity of their state, and the assaults on their sovereignty,” Kerry said. “We also urge that the Government of Ukraine continue to make clear, as it has from throughout this crisis, its commitment to protect the rights of all Ukrainians and uphold its international obligations.”

“As President Obama has said, we call for Russia to withdraw its forces back to bases, refrain from interference elsewhere in Ukraine, and support international mediation to address any legitimate issues regarding the protection of minority rights or security,” Kerry added.

Kerry said he also spoke to his counterparts Saturday from around the world, adding that they will work closely together to support Ukraine and its people “at this historic hour.”

“In the coming days, emergency consultations will commence in the UN Security Council, the North Atlantic Council, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in defense of the underlying principles critical to the maintenance of international peace and security,” he said.

“We continue to believe in the importance of an international presence from the UN or OSCE to gather facts, monitor for violations or abuses and help protect rights. As a leading member of both organizations, Russia can actively participate and make sure its interests are taken into account. The people of Ukraine want nothing more than the right to define their own future – peacefully, politically and in stability. They must have the international community’s full support at this vital moment. The United States stands with them, as we have for 22 years, in seeing their rights restored.”

When does the Republican Party, put in the majority by the Tea Party, plan to honor its commitment to halt the growth of the Federal monolith and bring the budget back into balance"?

Right.

Name me one International leader that takes anything that comes out of Kerry's mouth seriously.  Just one.

Have you seen the many videos of the Kerry lookalike that is going around the Middle East mocking him??  It would be funny if it were not so serious and getting more dangerous by the moment.  The Russians are moving troops into Ukraine freely and the American President and his Secretary of State are making speeches, shaking fingers, and spouting strong language, while Chuckie Hagel is over at the Pentagon more consumed by how to reduce the US Armed Forces to levels lower than World War I.

Incredibly dangerous time to be in the Ukraine, and those people already know that nobody is going to come to their aid.  Not NATO, not the United States Navy, Air Force, and especially not the Marines or the Army.  Strong language is all they expect from the US, based on demonstrated and ongoing US Performance Art going on in Syria, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and every other hotspot on the planet.

For once, I agree with Kerry.  There ARE profound consequences for Russia.  As a result of the west's capitulation, Putin will be able to re-assemble the Soviet Union and add Iran, Syria and their coming booty to his sphere of influence.  If that isn't profound, I don't know what is.

Obama chose Clinton and now, Kerry for a reason, and it isn't their intelligence.

How true and how scary that Kerry came so close (along with John Edwards) to being our leader.... both as hapless as O and Biden.

No matter how many times this crap is tried, and no matter how many people die each time, and no matter how many times it fails in collapse and misery,...

the LIBERAL/PROGRESSIVE still believe. They will do it again and again, even at the cost of their own lives and the lives of their children, family and friends. They just don't care.

They are blind fanatics in some kind of cult, and reality just doesn't matter to them.

This bluster from Obama and Kerry reminds me of "Night of the Iguana," where the tour group leader keeps warning Richard Burton's character, "Don't make me take steps, Mr. Shannon!"

Wait a minute here please. I just have a quick and simple question. What was that guy called?
It was something like a National Socialist Workers Party? I think it was something like that.

NATIONAL SOCIALIST WORKERS PARTY, does that ring any bells with anyone? Does that remind you of any political party today in America?

Please man. Some people are too stupid to even deserve to be alive. Too crazy. I can't even believe it.

There are an amazing number of Russian citizens who would like nothing more than the return of the Soviet Union, and Putin is just the guy to try it.  I doubt he's going to retake it all, but Ukraine has been a thorn in Russia's side for centuries, and the Crimea is one of the most disputed pieces of real estate on the planet.  I think the days of an independent Ukraine are just about over and by all accounts the Crimea is begging to be back as part of Mother Russia.

I'm not sure where all of this ends, but it ain't gonna be pretty.

During the Olympics while NBC was extolling the wonderful virtues of Putin and Russia they stated the recent polls amount the young in Russia they want a return to the country Stalin ruled... my first impression was they are suffereing the same lack of proper history education as the students in the USA.
