Bill Maher marked the fifth anniversary of the tea party Friday night by saying that the real origin of the group had everything to do with a “black president,” namely Barack Obama.
Taking a giant leap out of character and taking advantage of his place on HBO, conservative guest Bill Kristol shot back, “That is total bullshit!”“Even you don’t believe that,” Kristol said to Maher, “you’re just saying that.”
“I totally believe that,” Maher insisted. “A month after he took office, suddenly white people were very concerned about debt, even though Bush had raised the debt way more than Obama had. I don’t remember a tea party then.”
CNN contributor Margaret Hoover backed Kristol, saying that at first the tea party really was about fiscal issues, but went “off the rails” a bit in the ensuing years.
“They don’t really care about the debt that much,” Maher said. If you look at their websites, he said they are mostly talking about Benghazi, impeaching Obama and Obamacare. “I wonder if they ever really cared about the debt that much.”
