Report: Senate Candidate From Texas Urges Border Residents To Shoot 'Wetbacks' On Sight

Published February 26, 2014Fox News Latino

A Texas businessman who is running for the U.S. Senate in the GOP primary is drawing fire for referring to people who cross the border illegally as “wetbacks” and, later, defending his use of the slur.

Chris Mapp, who is among several candidates challenging U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in the GOP primary on March 4, used the term during an editorial board meeting with the Dallas Morning News.

In explaining its endorsement of Cornyn in the primary, a Dallas Morning News editorial said: “South Texas businessman Chris Mapp, 53, told this editorial board that ranchers should be allowed to shoot on sight anyone illegally crossing the border on to their land, referred to such people as ‘wetbacks,’ and called the president a ‘socialist son of a bitch.’”

Later, in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News, Mapp defended his use of the word and his characterization of undocumented immigrants.

He described the slur as normal for Texans.

Mapp said its use is as “normal as breathing air in south Texas,” according to the newspaper.

“We can't have illegal immigrants, drug cartels, human traffickers or terrorists coming across our border,” he said. “Our borders can either be sealed by choice or force, and so far choice hasn't worked.”

Cornyn condemned Mapp’s remarks.

“That kind of rhetoric is discouraging from anybody,” Cornyn said, according to the Express-News.

“I recognize this is a free country but that's not the sort of way to gain people's confidence that you care about them and you want to represent their concerns in the halls of Congress.”

Mapp countered that the Dallas newspaper took his comments about shooting border crossers were taken out of context.

He posted on his Facebook page: “Did I say ‘Wetbacks should be shot on sight’? NO I DID NOT. I said ‘OUR BORDERS CAN BE RESPECTED BY CHOICE OR BY FORCE AND CHOICE IS NOT WORKING.’”

“I WOULD NEVER ADVOCATE THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE UNLESS IN FEAR FOR YOUR LIFE OR FAMILY,” he wrote on his page. “I SAID THE USE OF FORCE IS OK. FORCE MEANS BY USE OF A MEANS OF DETOURING TO TURN AROUND AND GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM OR TO NOT WANT TO TRESPASS IN THE FIRST PLACE.”

Diana Arevalo, the secretary of the Bexar County Democratic Party, said that she was “offended by his comments and that he doesn't want to offer an apology to the Latino community and to our president of the United States of America.”

On his Facebook page, Mapp said he is not a racist, and that the controversy is a matter of political correctness. In a Feb. 22 post, he repeated the term. His campaign website also took aim at U.S. citizens, saying that some of them have been become too complacent and unwilling to do certain difficult jobs.

“We need guest workers; there would be less roofs, landscaping, concrete, fruits/vegetables and houses built without them,” he said. “If you believe that the level of unemployment in this country would go away if you sent every illegal back and the Americans would jump at those jobs, you would be terribly mistaken.”

Also in hot water over comments regarding immigrants is Democrat Alex Sink, who is running in a special election in Florida’s 13th congressional district. Sink, who ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2010, said in a debate this week that comprehensive immigration reform is crucial because foreign-born people are important for cutting grass and cleaning hotels.

“Immigration reform is important in our country,” she said. “We have a lot of employers over on the beaches that rely upon workers and especially in this high-growth environment, where are you going to get people to work to clean our hotel rooms or do our landscaping? We don’t need to put those employers in a position of hiring undocumented and illegal workers.”

I wonder what his freeper handle is?

I wish there was a decent challenger against Cornyn (I was really hoping Michael Williams would run). Mapp is obviously loony tunes. Stovall is a jerk. Stockman (who I ended up voting for) has major foot in mouth disease.

Cornyn will win next Tuesday comfortably.   FR has a fool who is stating that there's  a Poll that has Cornyn at 40% and Mapp at 20%.  What he is not telling the drool-cup-wearers over there is that it's an online poll, which is no poll at all.

Stovall has similar polls on his site but the funny thing is they are internet polls and they are doing the Ron Paul thing where all the followers spam the polls and pass them around so they are deceiving themselves. When I went to vote there were several Cornyn signs, none for any of his challengers.

We had a good opportunity here if we had someone like Michael Williams to take out Cornyn but it isn't looking promising right now. I guess we'll have to find a way to keep John in line.

"In line"?   He's a solid conservative with a solid record.  He doesn't believe in Ted Cruz's tactics of taking the country to the brink.  Neither do most Republicans.

The days of shutdown are over.

We'll know soon enough and IF Cornyn doesn't win without a runoff he is DONE!

His not winning outright alone would send a HUGE shock wave through Washington!

When it gets down to crunch time and your campaign is floundering in obscurity, even bad press can look like a good idea.

He will win outright.

The dwarves challenging Cornyn are an embarrassment.  Should there be a runoff, Stockman (who is the only one with a chance) is going to be made to look like the mental case he is.   He has no money, and none of the respectable Tea Party PACS are going to get near this guy.

I won't go so far is saying Cornyn won't have a run-off but I will agree his challengers are very weak, unorganized, and not properly capitalizing on promoting the people over the system.

The blue-hair Ann Richards crowd will always keep establishment in place here, no matter if it is a D or an R. They just want their dinner party.

I don't get the sense that there's this massive desire among Republicans in Texas to get rid of Cornyn.

Had Kay Bailey Hutchison not decided to retire, she would have been unbeatable too, even though she was much less conservative than Cornyn.  I voted for her in primaries (though she had few challengers) and in the general, even though she was pro-choice.

It was personal.  I liked her.  I suspect that may be the same thing that's driving support for Cornyn.  His ads are very personal, and he comes across as very likable.

As you say, his opponents are weak and unorganized.  What is telling is that no major PAC (FreedomWorks, Heritage Action) has jumped in to oppose Cornyn.  That ought to tell you something.

Was anybody taking this guy seriously, or is this simply the Cornyn campaign trying to cut off any potential opposition at the root? Same with the other guy (not Stockman).

The guy may be Looney Tunes but underlying his verbal flail rests a serious concern to American sovereignty and security.

The shooting at illegals is certainly justifiable in some cases.  However, using the term "wetback" can never be forgiven as far the left sees it.  You can shoot at them, chase them, threaten them but don't use a naughty word! :thud:

And underlying the massive stupidity of many democrat party voters/members is a serious concern with the welfare of others.  But as we've known since time immemorial, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions:  what matters is what you do, not what you think you're doing.  That is why Adam Smith's economics is so effective:  the economy works best for everyone when everyone is looking after their own self-interest - acting with selfish rather than altruistic intentions - than when everyone is trying to look out for everyone else's interest.

Or, to advert to another silly-ism, anyone who thinks we have to destroy the village to save the village is a dangerous fool, regardless of how deep his concern for saving the village is.

The Dallas Morning News took him seriously, especially when he's sitting in their offices and making these statements.  Why would we not take him seriously?  He repeated the "wetback" term TWICE.

If Mapp and Stovall think their primary runs are occasions to joke around, perhaps nobody should take them seriously.

Of course it's Cornyn's fault.  Cornyn let Chris Mapp open his mouth in front of reporters didn't he?

Of course it's Cornyn's fault.  Cornyn let Chris Mapp open his mouth in front of reporters didn't he?
My point is that fringe types like Mapp and Stovall run for elected office all the time. They don't typically get any attention because they typically have no money, very little support, and, quite frankly, are kooks. They're typically motivated only by vanity and the novelty of running for office.

Pretty much everyone here (and probably everywhere else) has agreed that the only serious competition for Cornyn was Stockman, and that he was always a longshot. If Stockman, an elected congressman, is a longshot, what does that say about the chances of the other two nobodies running? Why, then, are we paying them any attention?

Corynyn needs 50% of the vote to avoid a run off.  Plus it is fun to laugh at them when the puff out their chests and say they like turtle soup.

Well probably.  They don't want Guatemalans to horn in on their lucrative US scam.
