Rogers: Don't send U.S. Navy ships to the Black Sea
By REID J. EPSTEIN |
3/2/14 9:15 AM EST

President Barack Obama has no good military options to pressure Russia to leave Ukrainian territory, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said Sunday.

“There is not a lot of options on the table and, candidly, I’m a fairly hawkish guy, sending more naval forces to operate in the Black Sea is really not a very good idea, given that we know that that day has long passed,” the Michigan Republican said on “Fox News Sunday.” “And unless you’re intending to use them, I wouldn’t send them. Now you’ve got only economic options through the EU.”

Rogers said Obama should cancel American participation in the G8 summit planned for June at Sochi, Russia. And he warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to annex portions of the Crimean peninsula, where Russia rents a naval base from Ukraine.

“This is the most important territory to Putin himself,” Rogers said. “There’s an old expression that Russia without the Ukraine is a country and Russia with the Ukraine is an empire. I do believe Putin understands that but the most important part for him.

Rogers: Russians playing chess, U.S. playing marbles
By REID J. EPSTEIN |
3/2/14 9:25 AM EST

The Ukraine crisis is just the latest example of President Barack Obama being outmaneuvered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said Sunday.

“Putin is playing chess and I think we are playing marbles, and I don’t think it’s even close” the Michigan Republican said on “Fox News Sunday.”  “They’ve been running circles around us. And I believe it’s the naïve position on the National Security Council and the president’s advisers that, if we just keep giving things to Russia, they’ll wake up and say, 'the United States is not that bad.’ That is completely missing the motivations of why Russia does what Russia does.”

Putin intends to expand Russia’s “buffer zones,” as it has in Ukraine, Rogers said, predicting the next former Soviet republic to see a Russian invasion will be Moldova.

“It is in their interest to continue to push out that buffer zone,” Rogers said. “And, by the way, the big one that started this was the absolute retreat on our missile defense system in Poland and Czechoslovakia, caused us huge problems for our allies and emboldened the Russians and it really has been a downhill slide.”

Czechoslovakia split into two countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, in 1993.

Van Hollen: Focus on Putin, not Obama
By REID J. EPSTEIN |
3/2/14 9:46 AM EST

Americans should focus their ire on Russian President Vladimir Putin and not offer partisan attacks on President Barack Obama, Rep. Chris Van Hollen said Sunday.

“I think we’re 48 hours from an international crisis, I would hope Americans would focus on condemning the actions of Putin rather than in a knee-jerk way, again, criticizing the president of the United States,” Van Hollen (D-Md.) said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Van Hollen appeared on the program after House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (D-Mich.) blasted Obama for being outmaneuvered by Putin.

Kerry: 'A broad array' of economic and diplomatic options against Russia
By REID J. EPSTEIN |
3/2/14 10:01 AM EST

Secretary of State John Kerry said there are “a broad array” of economic and diplomatic options the U.S. and its allies can use to punish Russia for its foray into Ukrainian territory.

“Well there are very serious repercussions that can flow out of this,” Kerry said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “There are a broad array of options that are available, not just to the United States but to our allies.”

Kerry said he spent Saturday speaking by phone with American allies, who he said are “prepared to put sanctions in place, they’re prepared to isolate Russia economically.”

Among those options, Kerry said, include bans on Russian visas to the West, freezing assets of Russian companies and “American businesses may well want to start thinking twice about whether they want to do business with a country that behaves like this.”

“We’re not trying to make this a battle between East and West, we’re not trying to make this a cold war,” Kerry said. “Nobody wants this kind of action, there are many ways to resolve this kind of problem, as President Obama urged President Putin yesterday.”

Kerry: Russia behaving like it's the 19th century
By REID J. EPSTEIN |
3/2/14 9:49 AM EST

Secretary of State John Kerry said Russia is behaving “in a 19th century fashion” by invading Ukrainian territory in what he called “an incredible act of aggression” by President Vladimir Putin.

“It’s an incredible act of aggression, it is really a stunning willful choice by president Putin to invade another country,” Kerry said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

While stressing that the situation is not another “Cold War,” Kerry told host Bob Schieffer that Putin is trapped in a centuries-old mindset.

“You just don’t in the 21st century behave in 19th century fashion by invading another country on completely trumped up pre-text,” Kerry said. “It is serious in terms of sort of the modern manner with which nations are going to resolve problems. There are all kinds of other options still available to Russia. There still are. President Obama wants to emphasize to the Russians that there are a right set of choices that can still be made to address any concerns they have about Crimea, about their citizens, but you don’t choose to invade a country in order to do that.”

Kerry called the 90-minute phone call Obama held with Putin Saturday “a very important conversation” and he hopes Russia “will turn this around.”

“This does not have to be a zero-sum game,” Kerry said. “It is not Russia versus the United States, Russia v. Europe, this is about the people of Ukraine, the people of Ukraine are who initiated what happened there.”

Kinzinger: House will back Obama on Ukraine
By REID J. EPSTEIN |
3/2/14 10:29 AM EST

House Republicans will stand behind President Barack Obama in the faceoff with Russia over Ukraine, Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said.

“You’re going to find a House that’s very cooperative with the administration on this,” Kinzinger said in an interview broadcast Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”

Kinzinger, who sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the House will consider legislation calling for increased aid to Ukraine and adding that country and Georgia – which Russia invaded in 2008 – into NATO.

“I think it’s important, and I think you’ll see this, to stand very strong with the president and say, ‘We may not be able to respond militarily but we are going to make it clear that Russia is a pariah state, and not just for the next year but for the next decade.’”

Kerry: U.S. will 'stand up against any hooligans' in Ukraine
By REID J. EPSTEIN |
3/2/14 10:21 AM EST

Secretary of State John Kerry said he hopes the Ukrainian crisis does not devolve into an outright war, but reiterated that President Barack Obama is keeping “all options” available.

“The hope of the United States and everybody in the world is not to see this escalate into military confrontation,” Kerry said. “That does not serve the world well and I think everybody understands that.”

And yet Kerry said the United States will do what it can to preserve stability in Ukraine.

“We are prepare to stand up against any hooligans, any thuggery, any individual efforts with Russians in order to create stability in Ukraine and allow the people of Ukraine to make their choices for the future,” Kerry said.
