Senate Dems Won't Produce a Budget This Year

A Capitol Hill source source says that Senate Democrats will not produce a budget this year. The news is expected to come from Senator Patty Murray's office at 3 p.m. today, as part of a Friday afternoon news dump. Murray is chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.

Senator Jeff Sessions from Alabama released this statement. "Senate Democrats are required by law to produce a budget," wrote Sessions.

"Our nation is in enormous financial distress, and workers and families are suffering.  Senate Democrats have produced only one budget in the last five years.  This Senate and, more importantly, the American public, deserve to see a detailed ten-year financial plan to contain our dangerously rising debt and revitalize our dismal economy."

Sessions is ranking member -- the top Republican -- of the Senate Budget Committee.

Stephen Miller, Sessions's communications director, writes in an email to me: “Senate Democrats have declared to the American people that you have no right to know what their plan is for your family or your country. All they want you to know is that they should be in charge, calling the shots and running the show from Washington, D.C. In the last five years, the President and his party have added $7 trillion to the debt and the President’s budget is likely to propose adding $10 trillion more. Can they really honestly say they have no concern about continuing to plunder the national treasury? No concern about continuing a policy regime that is driving down wages and throwing workers out of jobs? No concern about tomorrow? Today they have made those answers to those questions unmistakably clear.”
