Obama to Announce $140M to Support Job Hubs in Chicago, Detroit
« on: February 25, 2014, 11:22:48 AM »
President Barack Obama planned to announce on Tuesday that two new manufacturing institutes aimed at creating quality jobs would be located in Chicago and Detroit and be supported by $140 million in federal funds, the White House said in a statement.

In an afternoon event, Obama will say that both of the institutes will be led by the Defense Department. The Detroit institute will focus on lightweight and modern metals manufacturing, while the Chicago-based hub will be based around digital manufacturing and design technologies.

Obama, whose calls Chicago his home town, is seeking ways to find jobs for middle-class Americans and raise their incomes. In the absence of a consensus in Congress on how to proceed, he is acting on his own where he can.

Part of that push is an effort to expand manufacturing jobs, many of which were lost in preceding decades as U.S. companies searched for cheaper labor abroad.

With a Republican-led House of Representatives focused on cutting federal spending and reducing the size of government, the president has been forced to scale back his plans for the institutes, finding money from savings within existing programs rather than securing a big chunk of new spending for them.

Obama will also announce a competition for the next manufacturing institute, this one on advanced composites, as part of his pledge to launch four institutes this year.

Obama introduced the manufacturing innovation institute idea in 2013. It is based on a German model and draws on a pilot program in Youngstown, Ohio. The president's goal is for there to be 45 such institutes in all.

The administration in January announced the first one in Raleigh, North Carolina, which is focused on spurring development of energy-efficient, high-power electronic chips.

Is this more of the PROMISE ZONES?

"The Tea Party has a right to feel cheated.

When does the Republican Party, put in the majority by the Tea Party, plan to honor its commitment to halt the growth of the Federal monolith and bring the budget back into balance"?

What on Earth makes this idiot think any of those jobs are going to come back, other than through wasteful subsidization by the federal leviathan?  Clearly this idiot's economic thinking is as stuck in the 60s and 70s as is his political thinking; if the US taxpayer is going to be forced to dump funds into this, why not try training people for the jobs of today and tomorrow, not the long-gone jobs of yesteryear.

Methinks the ulterior motive is nothing more than another sop to one of his favored constituencies - unions - and an indirect way of buying more votes; that $140 million is unlikely to last much beyond Nov. of this year, but that's about all he really needs it to last for.

You nailed both points.

Isn't it funny how they accused Romney's Russia stance of being in the 50's and guess where we are because of Obama's weakness?
They surely don't move forward and the union vote is who he is pandering.

Does anybody know if the unions all got a pass on Obamacare? It went back and forth it is hard to keep up. Last I recall, there was a headline that the unions were ticked off with Obama?

How can Obama allocate $140m for these projects?  Doesn't he need congressional approval for it?  He can't just hand out money left and lefter, can he?
Trump has created a cult and looks more and more like Hitler every day.

Once businesses see not only the liberal red tape, tax disincentives, dilapidated infrastructure, and crime and murder rate they will be sold by the strong union presence in both cities.  This should be nearly as effective at creating jobs as Solyndra. :thud:

But you know what?  It's still worth some votes because many voters are stupid.  Not the ideologues on the left or the right but the moderate middle will see Obama and the rats proposing a fix in bad times and the GOP saying no, and that is as deep as their thought goes.  They might say Obama has sucked at everything he's tried but at least he is trying to do something.

The GOP should be talking about jobs as much as Obamacare.  The should be proposing fixes until Nov.  If they work, great!  If they don't, at least they have something to counter the Kenyan come election time.

I would usually agree with the, 'at least he is trying to do something argument,' but paying off his political debt/favors, reforming ACORN and using the almighty union as a slush fund keeper. *With our taxpayer money* does not cut it as 'at least he is doing something.' No moderate middle voter-with half a brain- would buy into this, Obama slick game. Obama lost the independent vote and I would think no amount of snake oil will rectify this.

Another point in the 'at least he is doing something' vein.

Actions speak louder than words.

What about Solyndra? How'd that work out for Obama?

The legitimate high school grads of yesterday could perform the manufacturing jobs of yesterday.

The social promotion "grads" from Detroit and Chicago can't perform the jobs of today and tomorrow.

There is no place on earth where those people can compete for jobs of today and tomorrow, except unskilled labor, which they would not do.

They are "entitled" to positions above their capabilities. And that is supposedly our fault.

You have a higher opinion of moderate voters than I do.  I hope you're right and I'm wrong.
