by Breitbart Sports 22 Feb 2014, 10:28 AM PDT

The NFL may penalize players 15 yards for racial and homophobic slurs and eject them from the game after a second offense.

John Wooten, the head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, a group that monitors diversity, told ESPN that the he "expects the league to institute a rule where players would be penalized 15 yards for using the N-word on the field." Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome "said the committee talked about other slurs coming under any possible new rule, including homophobic slurs."

"I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do," Wooten told CBSSports.com. "We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room. Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."

Wooten expects the competition committee "will officially agree to the rule next month before presenting it to the owners" in March during NFL meetings. Newsome said the committee and the owners have to also examine any unintended consequences that could come from the new rule.

The deliberations come after numerous incidents involving the "N-word" last year, the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin incidents, and Michael Sam's recent admission that he is gay.

I suspect that it more often is a player "of color" who uses that epithet on the field than a white fellow, fwiw.

One of the beauties of having the Red Zone channel for football is that you get to see all of the unsportsmanlike conduct calls, and it is frequently some black player getting overly mouthy with another black player, or the occasional official, who gets flagged and ultimately fined by the NFL.  I'm surprised at how adept I have become at lip reading, especially during slo-mo replays, and it is amazing how frequently certain words come out of certain mouths....

We shall see how this all plays out in the coming season.  I suspect the first gay player is going to get his ass kicked as often as can be arranged on the field and his prospects for early injury retirement are excellent....

Good grief. I remember many, many years ago reading a article written by a  musician. He said some day here in USA we would have laws against speach. I remember reading it at the time thinking, not during my lifetime. I was wrong

Send the Obama police after me but the black players mixed with white trash are the ones using the N word. And if someone calls a gay,gay to his face, so what- he is gay. Big gov can't police their ideals and demoralization.

I think the NFL would be better served if they got rid of players who commit criminal acts.  And not just little ones like smoking a little pot.

The NFL GLORIFIES thugs and the thug life.

Beat your woman... get a signing deal.
Murder your woman... get a huge bonus.
Kill animals... get more money from new team.

Start tossing these asshats out and you'll see how fast they all begin to behave.

P.S.  I used to be a Philadelphia Eagles fan.  Not anymore.  I refuse to support them because they brought Michael Vick onboard.
They sent a msg to the world they didn't care about the character of their players.

Well, I do.

You nailed it. I wanted to say this but thought I would offend some. It is in college as well. Take THE Ohio State (no offense to their fans) v. LSU champ game. When tOSU beat the crap out of each other in the locker room during half-time because they were losing and blaming each other. Coached by a man who wears a sweater vest too boot.

I think in college and the NFL the thugs (white and black) should be punished and benched and not have coaches look the other way because they want to win or are in fear of being called a racist.

I'm sure as a big "c" Conservative, you are a huge fan of General George Patton.

If the wounded soldier he slapped in the face (like Cher slapped Nicholas Cage in "Moonstruck"---"snap out of it!") happened in a barracks setting rather than a medical ward, he probably would had beaten the crap out of him.

That said, the use of the "N" word in a football game and/or locker room doesn't have the same contextual meaning as it does to somebody who used it back in the 50's or 60's.

You could ask a dozen people and get a half-dozen different definitions.

Some of them are so close to one another that to be called the "N" word by them is taken as a term of endearment.

And guess what?  It is.

Are the officials going to carry another color flag to indicate naughty language?  What will the sign from the referee look like, a finger over the lips?  Will the guilty party have to write a letter of apology to the offended?  Will the term 'oreo' be considered naughty?  Just a few questions.

Can you imagine 3rd and goal at the 4 yard line with a playoff game on the line?

Defensive back looks across at the wide receiver....."you ain't coming this way, n*gga!"

TWEEEET!!!!    "Fifteen yards for unsportsmanlike conduct".

Can't argue with that, LC! They might have to play six-man teams for a while, though.  ^-^

Unfortunately, it's too late for that.

Half the league's revenue comes from television. That money is already committed in binding contracts through 2022 no matter who watches. Even if everybody boycotted the league (and knowing the irrational nature of sports fandom, that won't happen), the league would survive.and possibly even make money. It's the same reason Rush Limbaugh survived Sandra Fluke.

If it clears your conscience, fine, but realize that at this point nobody's going to make a dent in the Money League.

Yesterday, all talk radio was on this....sports talk...Rush...Savage...Plante.

It's interesting to hear black retired players' takes on it.....Lavar Arrington (Redskins-Penn State)....he says that the word exchanged between two blacks doesn't have the same meaning whatsoever.

He said they aren't going to like being censored by a bunch of old white guys dictating their speech.

Rooney would not allow the work anywhere in the Steelers' organization.   Arrington said once that Joe Gibbs made him wear head phones if he was going to play rap music with profanity.

It's time for these kids to understand the "work place" is nowhere to use that language.

As the NFL's competition committee soon considers a rule that would penalize players for using the N-word on the field, one veteran believes it will be difficult for the league to police the use of the racial slur.

"I think it's going to be really tough to legislate this rule, to find a way to penalize everyone who uses this word," Ryan Clark, a Pittsburgh Steelers safety who's spent 12 years in the league, told ESPN's Bob Ley during an "Outside The Lines" special report. "And it's not going to be white players using it toward black players. Most of the time you hear it, it's black players using the word." ...

Phil Muchnick comments in the March 7 NY Post:

NFL’s real N-word problem not on the field

Not sure why the NFL would choose to now punish players who use the “N-word.” Heck, one of President Obama’s most cherished campaigners, campaign contributors and pals, Jay Z, has for years publicly referred to black men as “N—-s.”

President and Mrs. Obama recently smiled and arm-danced their approval to Snoop Dogg’s act when Dogg — or whatever his name is, these days — was honored for lifetime achievement at the Kennedy Center. Before Jay Z, Snoop Dogg’s recordings regularly called black men the N-word.

Just a shame Snoop didn’t choose to entertain the President and First Lady with one of his numbers, such as “For All My N—-z & Bitches.” He might have even treated the First Family to snippets from his hard-core porn video.

Meanwhile, the NFL Players Association and its members have no problem with Jay Z serving as an NFL player agent. And the NFL, in the name of tune-in TV entertainment, invites performers whose enterprise includes calling African-American men “N—-s.”

The ship long ago sailed on this one, Commissioner Goodell. It’s a world gone nuts. After all, if the President and First Lady have no problem with the N-word …
