Then the doctor didn't lie.  Understanding each individual patient well enough to know the best way to tell him/her what's going on is a skill that only the best, most experienced doctors develop, and it is one of the fundamentals of good care.  What it is not is lying.  The fact that the piece is titled "When Doctors Need to Lie" and the fact that it was published by the NYT - a yellow journalism outfit - heavily imply that this is really a political hit-piece with the covert goal of "normalizing" the American public to the (false) belief that they should be lied to when "The Doctor" - who will very soon be The Government - believes that it's in their best interests.

This is an ugly little political hit piece and this doctor should be ashamed of himself for so willingly participating in it.
