Equally or more significant than the number of enrollees, whether they paid, is the mix of enrollees.

The system depends on young people with low medical usage paying big premiums to subsidize coverage for others' higher medical usage.

Those young people were to either volunteer, or be coerced by tiny penalties. Many will take the penalty, forego insurance, pay their occasional medical bills out of pocket, and be many thousands better off.

Meanwhile there is a big incentive for people that get subsidies to sign up. I know of two middle aged women that previously had no health insurance, had previous conditions, signed up and got big subsidies.

With a mix based on rational self-interest decisions, will come the need to subsidize the insurance industry. Obama and his silver tongued followers will try to avoid and spin about this until they get out of office, but it will come to that.

For November the GOP can claim the democrats' mess has huge additional costs to government, has kicked people off their insurance, has left more not less uninsured, and damaged the quality of care.

They also need to state how to remedy the problem, plainly and simply.
