Former Rep. Melvin Reynolds (D., Ill.) was arrested in Zimbabwe, the Associated Press reports.

A Zimbabwean immigration official told the Associated Press that Reynolds is being investigated.

The state-controlled newspaper, The Herald, reported that Reynolds was arrested Monday for allegedly possessing pornographic material and violating immigration laws.

Reynolds, an Illinois Democrat, resigned from his congressional seat in 1995 after he was convicted of 12 counts of statutory rape, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography.

The Herald said Reynolds was arrested by police detectives and immigration officials at a Harare hotel. […]

The newspaper reported that Reynolds had accumulated hotel bills worth $24,500 which he has not yet paid.

Ex-congressman hiding in S. Africa after ‘trumped up’ porn charges
By Associated Press
March 4, 2014 | 11:42am

JOHANNESBURG — Former US Rep. Mel Reynolds says he is in hiding in South Africa following his deportation from Zimbabwe because he believes his life is in danger.

He told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that he believes he is being pursued by a secret Zimbabwean death squad because of information he has on American businessmen, especially from Chicago, who are doing business illegally with Zimbabwe.

He accused the Mugabe regime of “trumping up” pornography charges against him two weeks ago to discredit him. He was arrested Feb. 16, and after spending a few days in a Zimbabwean jail, the pornography charges were dropped on a technicality while he pleaded guilty to violating Zimbabwe’s immigration laws.

He was deported to South Africa on Feb. 23 after paying a $100 fine.

Now this is how we like to see our congressmen!
