Secretary of State John Kerry told Indonesians on Sunday that global warming is now "perhaps the world's most fearsome weapon of mass destruction."

"Think about the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. It doesn't keep us safe if the United States secures its nuclear arsenal while other countries fail to prevent theirs from falling into the hands of terrorists," Kerry told students at a high-tech U.S.-funded cultural center at a Jakarta mall.

Kerry added, "The bottom line is this: it is the same thing with climate change. In a sense, climate change can now be considered another weapon of mass destruction, perhaps even the worlds most fearsome weapon of mass destruction."

Kerry explained to the Indonesian students that climate change represents an existential threat to their very survival.

"Because of climate change, it's no secret that today Indonesia of the most vulnerable countries on Earth," Kerry said. "It's not an exaggeration to say that the entire way of life that you live and love is at risk."

Kerry went on to deride scientists and citizens who challenge global warming's scientific validity.

"We should not allow a tiny minority of shoddy scientists and science and extreme ideologues to compete with scientific facts," said Kerry. "The science is unequivocal, and those who refuse to believe it are simply burying their heads in the sand. We don't have time for a meeting anywhere of the Flat Earth Society."

Kerry's Indonesia speech was just one portion of his three-nation jet-setting tour of Asia.

Kerry is correct that climate change is a fearsome thing, and it is even ironic he is in Indonesia to point that out.

Some of the most significant climate changes the planet has ever experienced in millions of years has been caused by different volcanic eruptions that caused significant, near instantaneous, and decades long lasting changes that range from the complete extinction of the dinosaurs to years with no summers, failed crops and massive famine.

And Indonesia is one of the most volcanically active regions on the planet with more active volcanoes along the Indonesian Archepelego than any other place on the planet.

Of course Lurch doesn't know or care about any of that........

This evening's weather forecast for our region is pretty darn fearsome:
Winter Weather Advisory for the northern half of the viewing area this evening through tomorrow morning. Snow & sleet with some rain south develops between 8 - 9 pm. Heavy burst of snow through midnight. Freezing drizzle after midnight. Back to snow towards morning. 2-4" northern half of the area, 1-2" southern half of the area.
Yeah, it must be the carbon dioxide.   :pondering:
“Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual – or at least that he ought not so to do; but rather he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country.” Samuel Adams, April 16, 1781.
