Norwegian mass shooter cries ‘torture’ over outdated video game console

Posted By Chuck Ross On 8:05 PM 02/15/2014

Anders Breivik, the mass shooter who killed 77 people in Norway in 2011, says that he is “in hell” and will go on a hunger strike unless prison authorities upgrade his PlayStation video game and provide him with other luxuries.

“Other inmates have access to adult games while I only have the right to play less interesting kids games. One example is ‘Rayman Revolution,’ a game aimed at three year olds,” wrote Breivik, in a letter to authorities written in November and recently obtained by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Breivik currently has a PlayStation 2, but he wants a PlayStation 3. Anything less is “torture,” he wrote in the correspondence obtained by AFP.

In July 2011, Breivik, who is now 35, went on a terror spree, setting off bombs in Oslo which killed eight people. He them stormed a Workers’ Youth League camp on the island of Utoeya, killing 69 others, mostly teenagers. In a detailed manifesto, Breivik railed against Islamic immigration and multiculturalism.

Breivik, who has been diagnosed with a slew of psychiatric disorders, is 18 months into his 21-year sentence. Like its Scandanavian neighbors, Norway is one of the most lenient countries in the world in terms of punishment for prisoners.

The mass shooter laid out a list of twelve demands in his letter to authorities. Besides the video game upgrade, Breivik demanded daily walks, more interaction with the outside world, a sofa or armchair to replace a “painful” chair, and a doubling of his weekly allowance, which is the equivalent of about $49, reported AFP.

“You’ve put me in hell,” Breivik complained in the letter. “I won’t manage to survive that long. You are killing me.”

He also predicted that if he died he’d become a martyr to other extremists if his dozen demands were not met.

“If I die, all of Europe’s right-wing extremists will know exactly who it was that tortured me to death… That could have consequences for certain individuals in the short term but also when Norway is once again ruled by a fascist regime in 13 to 40 years from now,” he wrote.

Breivik, who also called himself a “human rights activist,” wrote that he would embark on a hunger strike and only relent when Norway’s Minister of Justice and the head of Norwegian Correctional Services “stop treating me worse than an animal,” AFP reported.

They concentrate on rehabilitation, not punishment. Treating inmates as human beings is part of that process, and it works. There is a very low recidivism rate in the Nordic countries, compared to the UK or the USA.

The problem is when you get someone like Breivik. He can't be rehabilitated, though it sounds like they are trying anyway. The games he is given to play sound like therapy to me. Socialization and social response training. As for not having a PS3 - it's easy to hack into them and get internet access. My grand kids can do it. He's not permitted access to the internet at all, and it is one of the wiser terms of his sentence.
The universe doesn't hate you. Unless your name is Tsutomu Yamaguchi
