Two College Math Majors Build 800-Pound Snowball and Roll It Downhill — They’d Like to Have That Moment Back
Feb. 15, 2014 6:43pm Dave Urbanski

During a rare storm that dumped about 12 inches of snow on Portland, a pair of Reed College math majors decided to make a large snowball.

As they rolled it back and forth, it picked up more and more snow and gained mass. College officials said the ball was some 40 inches in diameter and weighed from 800 to 900 pounds. “It was a big snowball,” maintenance manager Steve Yeadon told Reed Magazine.

By 8 p.m. last Saturday, a crowd had gathered and was chanting “Roll it! Roll it!” Of course, they gave their peers what they wanted.

But the math majors apparently didn’t figure the trajectory correctly. The snowball sped up, shifted direction, and smacked into a dorm wall.

It ripped the wall off its studs and barely missed a window. No one was injured.

Three students sitting in the living room were startled by a “huge crash,” Reed Magazine reported; then they saw the giant crack running down the bedroom wall.

The culprits immediately reported the incident to the Community Safety Office, saying they were responsible. The AP reported that the snowball builders have not been disciplined.

It took a Reed maintenance worker 45 minutes to cut through the snowball to inspect the damage estimated between $2,000 to $3,000.

Keeping Portland weird.  Reed College has the highest student body in the State of Oregon...marijuana use is nearly a prerequisite for admission and they have had a number of heroin overdoses and deaths over the years....

$45k/year in tuition, too.  It's where mommy and daddy send their little trust fund babies to play for 4 years.

When Mr. M was a young lad, he and a buddy were playing in the woods on a hillside above town. They  dislodged a large rock to see what creatures might be living underneath, but then the rock escaped their grasp and  rolled down the hill. Fast forward a few years:  Mr. M is in high school picking up a young lady for a date. He chats with her father and comments that they have a nice family room. The dad responds that a few years back they had to make some repairs when a boulder inexplicably came crashing into the back of the house ...

Of course, I should point out he was a 9-year-old at the time, not a college student (though 9 may be the emotional age of your average collegian these days, I don't know).  :tongue2:

Exactly right, but many of these students are incurring incredible student debts as well....

Colleges have suffered student morbidity and mortality from alcohol abuse, alcohol poisoning and accidents related to alcohol use since there were colleges. The drug of choice is irrelevant to destructive collegiate behavior.

Overall, there are approximately 88,000 deaths attributable to excessive alcohol use each year in the United States. The number of deaths from illegal drugs pales in comparison.

Math is hard. But physics is sometimes unforgiving.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn
