by Matthew Boyle 13 Feb 2014

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told conservative radio host Mark Levin on Thursday evening that establishment GOP politicians will “never” listen to the American people.

“If we wait on the entrenched politicians in Washington, hell will freeze over before that happens,” Cruz answered when Levin asked whether Republicans will ever listen. “This is nothing new. The answers come from America, from millions of people standing up and holding elected officials accountable.”

Cruz, who coined the Twitter hashtag #MakeDCListen during the government shutdown episode, has often returned to a theme of forcing Washington D.C. insiders to listen to the public.

He noted that in the prelude to the shutdown, many Republicans preferred to push for spending cuts with the debt ceiling as leverage.

“A few months ago, when we were fighting trying to stop the disaster that is Obamacare, where a lot of Washington gray beards said, ‘we are going to fight on the debt ceiling. That’s where the fight will be,’” Cruz said. “It’s like they think the American people are a bunch of rubes, we don’t remember what they say.”

Wednesday, Cruz forced a procedural roll call requiring a 60-vote majority on the "clean" debt ceiling bill, despite Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's forceful urging he allow the legislation to go through with only a bare-majority vote. Cruz said Republicans should have united against the cloture motion, preventing the debt ceiling from being raised.

“If 41 Republicans had stood together and just voted no, the clean debt ceiling, the blank check for President Obama and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi want would have been denied,” Cruz said. “And for all of them who say I am just a crazy rebel, the last 55 times the debt ceiling has been increased, Congress has attached meaningful conditions to it 28 of those times. It's the only leverage point that has ever been effective.”

Cruz said earlier in the interview that many Republicans in the U.S. Congress wanted to increase the debt ceiling. “Make no mistake about it,” Cruz said. “This was their desired outcome. An awful lot of Republicans wanted exactly what Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid wanted, which is to raise the debt ceiling. But, they wanted to be able to tell what they view as their foolish gullible constituents that they didn’t do it, and they’re mad because by my refusing to consent to [a bare-majority vote] they had to come out in the open and admit to that.”

Cruz's move to force the 60-vote procedural tally forced a dramatic, hour-long vote in which McConnell and GOP Whip John Cornyn scrambled to find enough Republicans to join Democrats and invoke cloture. During the vote, the clerk abstained from a decades-long practice of announcing each vote into a microphone as it was cast, preventing the public from knowing who had already voted and thus, who was switching their votes. McConnell and Cornyn ultimately joined in voting for cloture, after which six of their GOP colleagues switched to join them, providing additional political cover.

"The Tea Party has a right to feel cheated.

When does the Republican Party, put in the majority by the Tea Party, plan to honor its commitment to halt the growth of the Federal monolith and bring the budget back into balance"?

Speaking of establishment, I get to go see John Cornyn and Karl Rove Sunday. I'll try to be on my best behavior (I have to, I'm photographing the band).

“If 41 Republicans had stood together and just voted no, the clean debt ceiling, the blank check for President Obama and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi want would have been denied,” Cruz said.

Obama WANTED the GOP to follow Cruz off the cliff and refuse to raise the debt ceiling.  Reid would have shut down the Senate and waited until the morning of Feb. 27 to force another vote.  In the intervening two weeks, the GOP would have been pounded and pounded, the markets would be nervous, and the GOP brand would be driven even lower.

Instead, McConnell and Cornyn avoided the shutdown scenario, robbing the Democrats of an issue.

So, naturally, Cruz is pissed. He's not the center of attention like he was in October.

They swore they were going to demand concessions in spending before they would pass the another debt ceiling increase... but hells bells who cares if this country becomes Greece - certainly not the GOP or their sycophants.

Would the Democrat Senate and President Obama have agreed to concessions in spending?  Or would they have resisted and blamed the GOP for defaulting on the debt?

If you and Cruz hate the GOP, why not leave it?  Lots of people have.  Cruz spends ALL his time trashing his fellow conservatives.  No wonder he stood alone on this filibuster.

I did leave it because of people like you and the people you insist on supporting who are destroying this country.  There is no difference between any of you and the Democrats.

The GOP is half of the problem, the other half being the Democrats, and as long as party politics take precedence over anything else, nothing will ever change.  Our system is exactly the way politicians have crafted it to benefit themselves and party interests only.

Both good questions because the answers are self-evident to those with the honesty to think about it.

What can be seen up thread is avoiding the question. Last time the public responded by blaming the GOP for threatening to shut down the government, playing brinkmanship with the economy, etc.

Cruz is playing a role. Is it aimed at resolving the issue, or merely gaining him recognition?

He should propose cuts. Name them. Justify them to the public.

Then why do Paul, Lee, Cruz remain with the Republicans?  Are they still of a mind "they can change it from within"?  Not if they are intellectually honest they're not.  They actually would have more power outside the party than within.  Their votes would actually be worth something.
Why?  Well, because I'm a bastard, that's why.

These "true conservative" forums are entertaining. Cruz is the latest fad leader. But ask yourself: Is he changing minds? Is he getting results, or just headlines?

Is he changing minds in his own party? Is he leading where they will go? (they took little time to reject his path)

Is he changing minds among the nations voters? (both GOP and Tea Party favorability trending down, not up)

Are "conservatives" thoughtful enough to grapple with such questions, or do they just jump to their next fad leader?

True conservatives may represent the sentiments of 20-25% of the populace. That is not enough to gain, hold and exercise power.

Convincing people, changing minds is the name of the game for succeeding; if succeeding is even the objective.

Calling people names does not change minds. Alienating your colleagues does not gain supporters. Reagan was on the scene for many years, to build a following, and to change minds.

If all I know about any given race is that there is a Republican and a Democrat running  I'm going to vote for the Republican 100% of the time. In fact that is exactly what I do in the general election (only takes one mark on the ballot where I live). But in Primaries I'm going to find the most conservative person running in every race and vote for that person!

And before anyone asks me, MY definition of Conservative is one who understands, and will govern according to, the tenants laid out in the Constitution!

Generally that is my approach, however one qualifier.

I will vote for the most conservative candidate THAT CAN WIN the general.  I will not vote for the glib whacko bird who cannot win. That often means a fringe Republican or 3rd party option that sounds good, but has zero chance of winning a general election.

Several safe Republican seats were handed to the democrats because that strategy was not followed.

The Tea Party movement needs to do a much better job of vetting candidates, and NOT supporting everybody that comes along. Politicians are ambitious, will say anything, including those from the right.

FOS as usual.

Anybody who sees no difference between Republicans and Democrats is living in another universe.

Your boy Cruz has accomplished nothing in his short time in the Senate but alienating his colleagues and driving down the approval of his own party.

Well, that's not true.  I forgot that he's been stuffing Tea Party cash in his pockets at a record rate.  All for his own political benefit.

He's as big a showboater as Obama.  Maybe bigger.

Which really makes me wonder if your only reason for spending so much time here is because you really get your jollies in talking down to everyone so you can make yourself feel like you are so much smarter than us poorly conservatives.  You certainly get off on mocking the only people who actually care to save this country from the socialists in both parties.

Don't kid yourself.  You're not doing anymore to "save the country" by posting on a website or thinking that a "no compromise" position is the only correct position than anybody else.

Did you post your comment to TS about "talking down to everyone" with a straight face?

I don't go on liberal sites and mock the liberals who post there, yet he spends hours here mocking conservatives and the Tea Party both of which this site is and supports.

So?  Until Myst says this is exclusively a Tea Party site, all comments are welcome.  Or are they not?

Oh, and he doesn't mock conservatives.  He mocks a certain narrow segment of conservatism which, at times, deserves mocking.

I'm in general agreement with Tea Party objectives but not at all with the more extreme tactics employed by some Tea Party politicians.

:amen: Most of the fence sitters and even democrats that I know, and some I read about here and there, have claimed Cruz made an impact on them. These are people that were mostly apathetic, and now 'see the light' so to speak because of him. To even hint, let alone accuse him of not being relevant is idiotic. To say he divided the republican party is also a misnomer. The break began during Bush's term, and luckily, Cruz was elected to help fill the void. The void certainly isn't the status quo, but a new beginning that has its roots in the past.

She and R4 have both stated on multiple occasions we support the Tea Party here.  Other voices are welcome, but don't get angry when you get strong push back - and yes - I posted this to TS, but since you sought to get into this - he does mock both conservatives as well as "people who post on conservative sites"..... pretty darned often, which is why I said why come on a conservative site to mock conservatives unless it's very purpose to anger conservatives.
