NEW YORK (TheBlaze/AP) — A pregnant woman who was loading groceries into the trunk of her car with her husband was struck and killed by a mini-snowplow on Thursday morning.
And though the woman’s grieving family is surely in unthinkable pain and mourning, her baby boy was successfully delivered by emergency cesarean section, according to authorities.
Min Lin was hit by a utility vehicle with a snowplow attached to it as it backed up in the rear parking lot of the Fei Long Shopping Center in Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge neighborhood, police said.
After she was rushed by paramedics to nearby Maimonides Medical Center, doctors acted quickly to deliver her nearly full term, 6-pound, 6-ounce baby, hospital spokeswoman Eileen Tynion told the Associated Press.
As of Thursday afternoon, the baby was in critical condition in the neonatal intensive care unit, Tynion said. A family member was present with him but declined to talk to the media.
Police say Lin, 36, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
No charges have been filed against the driver of the vehicle, a 42-year-old man, who remained at the scene after Lin was struck. Police say it appears to have been an accident.
The man was clearing the parking lot of snow, police said. About 9.5 inches of snow had fallen on the city by Thursday morning.
A woman who answered the shopping center’s phone declined to comment.
Earlier this month, a privately owned vehicle that was plowing snow in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach neighborhood struck and killed a 73-year-old man who was crossing mid-block as it backed up.
