SWEET MERCY! The dress Mrs. Obama wore to the State Dinner last night cost more than the annual US poverty level.

Mrs. Obama's dress -- $12,000
U.S. Poverty level -- $11,490

Don't the designers gift them to the First Ladies for advertizing benefits?

Nancy Reagan wore fancy gowns given to her as gifts, if I remember right.

I've read that too..some designers *lend* them...like they do for the Oscars and such...I still would like to know...if we bought the dress?

This is a non-sensical and absurd comparison to make.

Slow news day.

Yes, the media have swooned over her infield tarp dress.
Us Weekly via Yahoo:

Beautiful in blue! Michelle Obama had yet another best-dressed moment on Tuesday, Feb. 11. The first lady wore a gorgeous blue gown to the state dinner with her husband, President Barack Obama, at the White House in Washington, D.C. honoring President Francois Hollande of France.

Mrs. Obama, 50, selected a dress by Venezuelan-American designer Carolina Herrera for the occasion. The gown featured a low-cut black lace top with three-quarter sleeves, a silk faille inverted pleat skirt in a liberty blue color and black velvet belt. To accessorize the look, Obama wore large dangling earrings, glam eye makeup and styled her shoulder-length hair straight with extra volume. Herrera confirmed to CBS News that she made the dress at her New York Atelier.

Susan Swimmer, author of Michelle Obama: First Lady of Fashion and Style, told CBS News that the dress reflected French aesthetics. "It's very French in terms of how ornate it is and the use of lace and the velvet sash," Swimmer said.

The author's only critique of the gown? "I don't know that she's ever worn sleeves for a formal occasion," Swimmer said. "Why would she? She's got fabulous arms!"
Hey, Susan, how's the view from inside Moochelle's colon?

Honestly, I've never seen an uglier dress at that price. One could find better off the rack at Filene's Basement.
