An amphibious submachine gun capable of shooting under water and the Kornet-E anti-tank missile system with laser guidance are being presented for the first time in India at Defexpo-2014.

Russian producers also presented the modernized T-90S tank, the self-propelled anti-tank gun Sprut SD, the air defense weapons Pantsiri, Thor, Tunguska and Igla, as well as the submarine Amur and the coastal missile system Bal-E.

37 Russian companies are being represented at the premier defence exhibition in India and the Russian dominance can be explained by Moscow’s flexible approach to the transfer of technology in building military-technical cooperation with India.

“The main objective of Defexpo-2014 is to provide assistance to the program of indigenisation of arms supplies to Indian armed forces,” according Ali Ahmed, a strategic analyst said. “This involves a gradual withdrawal from direct purchases of foreign technical equipment in favour of the acquisition of technologies, used for its further independent production. Russia is an obvious leader here. While others are just starting to realize the new reality, the Russian side already has examples of such cooperation,” Ahmed added.

On the eve of the opening of Defexpo-2014, the Deputy Defence Minister of India Gokul Chandra Pati hinted that the conditions for foreign direct investment into the Indian defence sector may be revised.  At the moment, Indian legislation sets a limit of 26 percent for foreign direct investment into the defence industry.
