New York Enacts Strict New Gun Laws: NRA Membership In State Promptly Doubles

In response to the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York pushed through strict new gun laws. Subsequently, membership in the state’s NRA affiliate has doubled.

State membership has jumped from 22,000 to 41,000 since the passage of the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act in 2013. The chapter also reported the receipt of $200,000 in donations to fight the law, Newsmax reported.

“Membership growth over the past year has pushed [the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association] into the top spot over the Texas State Rifle Association and California Rifle & Pistol Association,” the chapter said on its website, Newsmax reported. Chapter president Tom King said:

“This just goes to show how much mainstream support Second Amendment civil rights have in New York State. [Membership] has grown exponentially faster than it ever has before, and it can only be attributed to the SAFE Act.”

Incidentally, in December, a federal judge upheld key provisions of New York’s strict new gun laws, but struck down a provision which prevented gun owners from loading more than seven rounds of ammunition into clips. Clearly, the debate over gun-owner rights will continue. Even more clear, the NRA is alive and well in the state of New York.
