PETA requests 10-foot-high roadside memorial for chickens killed in accident
By Howard Portnoy on February 7, 2014 at 12:58 pm

Oh, the humanity poultry! Last month, a tractor trailer carrying an indeterminate number of live chickens overturned on a highway outside Athens, Ga. According to reports at the time, there were no injuries — meaning human injuries. All the chickens perished.

To underscore that their deaths were not in vain, the watchdog group, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), has asked the Georgia Department of Transportation to erect a 10-foot-high roadside memorial.

No, you have not logged on to The Onion; the story is for real, reported by NBC affiliate 11 Alive. The station interviewed PETA spokeswoman Sarah Segal. “They are living creatures, so they do feel pain, just like we do,” said Segal, author of the petition.

In a news release, PETA associate director of campaigns Lindsay Rajt wrote:

Chickens suffer from the time they’re babies, when they have their sensitive beaks cut off with a searing-hot blade. Our proposed statue would bring this suffering to the public’s attention and would encourage people to stop eating chickens. At the very least, it would remind motorists to be more alert and help prevent future terrifying crashes.

But GDOT director of administration Meg Pirkle said no dice to the memorial. Memorials on highways and interstates are strictly regulated, she went on to explain. In any case, when memorials are erected, they are generally 15-inch discs, not 10-foot gravestones.

Also, the agency added, the program is restricted to people. That is perhaps the unkindest cut of all.

Did they dig a hole and bury them all on the roadside?

To underscore that their deaths were not in vain

Really?  Were they being shipped to Colorado to save the potheads from deadly cases of the munchies?

Which is exactly why nobody takes these people seriously.  I think they get big donations from a small group of people and that is the only thing that keeps them going.

This is equivalent to giving money to the guy on the freeway ramp.  The only reason he is there is because he knows there are people who will give him money.  If it wasn't profitable, he would not be there.  Same goes for PETA.

Not that long ago, these chickens would not have gone to waste, and made a lot of good meals.

Some of them won't have. Want to bet there were a few cop car trunks stuffed with chickens? It's normal in the case of a crash of a truck carrying perishables. I remember staying up for 24 hours once canning peaches after a truck crash (neighbour was a cop and not only loaded his car but called Dad to bring his truck down.)

But in the main, dead animals are not allowed to enter the human food chain unless we made them dead - which is a generally wise policy as far as I am concerned. They'll probably have wound up as pet food, assuming there was a processing plant close enough.

I do support a statue to chickens though. Dogs may be a man's best friend. Cats  occasionally stir themselves to deal with pests. Horses are the perfect form of transport. But chickens are the gift that keeps on giving.

not far from us, a truck carrying Hershey's kisses recently crashed. A week later Mr. M attended a law enforcement seminar at work and the speaker handed out bags of chocolates he admitted had been rescued from the wreckage.
