Bill Clinton, Barack Obama to address Senate Democrats

By JOHN BRESNAHAN and MANU RAJU | 1/30/14 1:37 PM EST Updated: 1/30/14 2:46 PM EST

President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton will be the headline speakers for Senate Democrats at their retreat next week at the Washington Nationals stadium, Democratic sources said.

It’s the latest effort by Clinton to help Senate Democrats as they fight to hold onto the chamber in 2014.

He’s appeared in two videos for Alison Lundergan Grimes, who is challenging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) in Kentucky. The former president is expected to stump for her later this year as well.

Clinton has also done a fundraiser for Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor in Arkansas, and both he and Hillary Clinton are likely to become far more involved in that race as the year unfolds. Pryor is facing a tough challenge from GOP Rep. Tom Cotton.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) invited Clinton to speak at the retreat.

Obama has been touring the country in support of his agenda following the State of the Union address on Tuesday night. With his poll numbers slumping, vulnerable Senate Democrats may not want Obama coming to swing states this year, but he remains a powerful fundraising and organizing tool for the party.
