WaPost Poll: Christie Plunges in Support Behind Paul Ryan, Jeb Bush
Thursday, January 30, 2014 08:54 AM

By: Sandy Fitzgerald

The George Washington Bridge scandal appears to be harming New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie politically, according to a new poll that puts him in third place among potential 2016 presidential candidates.

Christie topped the Republican field in many public opinion polls last year, but respondents to a Washington Post-ABC News poll put the governor in third place behind Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, reports The Washington Post.

The poll, taken earlier this month from a random national sample of 1,003 adults, however, shows Republicans overall do not yet have a clear front-runner in the race, but shows Hillary Rodham Clinton has a 6 to 1 lead over other potential Democratic candidates.

The former first lady and secretary of state netted a 73 percent ranking among Democrats and liberal-leaning independents in the poll. Vice President Joe Biden trailed far behind her in the poll, receiving 12 percent of the respondents, and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren gathered 8 percent.

On the Republican side, however, support levels ranged closely, from 10 percent to 20 percent among six prospective candidates. Ryan gathered 20 percent of the Republican and right-leaning independents responding to the poll, and Bush received 18 percent. Christie gathered 13 percent of the respondents. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas netted 12 percent; Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul got 11 percent; and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio scored 10 percent.

Among tea party backers, Cruz received a large lead, with 28 percent, followed by Ryan at 18 percent. But Cruz only scored four percent of the votes from people who oppose the tea party movement or have no opinion about it.

Christie ranked weakest among the tea party supporters, netting six percent. Bush did well among self-identified Republicans, and Ryan marked strength among white evangelical Protestants, young voters and more moderate conservatives. Rubio was strong among Republican respondents who have college degrees.

Christie's reputation has also taken a hit among Democrats, with more now viewing him unfavorably than favorably, the poll discovered. Republicans were split on his favorability, with 43 percent having a favorable view and 33 percent unfavorable.

The public is split on the bridge-gate scandal, however. Forty-six percent of respondents consider the issue a "sign of broader problems" with Christie's leadership, but 43 percent said they think the scandal is an "isolated incident." And 57 percent of Republicans say the bridge incident is isolated, but 60 percent of Democrats said the incident is a sign of larger problems.

None of the potential candidates have officially declared their intentions. Warren says she will not run, although some liberal groups back her as an alternative to Clinton.

Clinton's ratings, though, have dropped in the year since she left the State Department. Then, 67 percent of poll respondents said they favored her. But her popularity remains as high or higher than it was when she was a New York senator.

Hillary Clinton has big lead over Dems; GOP contest wide open for 2016: poll

By David Sherfinski-The Washington Times Thursday, January 30, 2014

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton holds a commanding lead over other possible 2016 Democratic presidential contenders, while the race for the Republican nomination looks to be somewhat of a free-for-all this early in the proceedings.

Seventy-three percent of Democrats prefer Mrs. Clinton, compared to 12 percent for Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and 8 percent for Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows.

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan narrowly leads a field of a half dozen potential candidates on the Republican side, with 20 percent of GOP voters choosing the House Budget Committee chairman and 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee.

Eighteen percent prefer former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and 13 percent choose New Jersey Gov, Chris Christie. Rounding out the specific candidates on the GOP side are three U.S. senators: Ted Cruz of Texas gets 12 percent, Rand Paul of Kentucky gets 11 percent, and Marco Rubio of Florida takes 10 percent.

Among registered voters, Mrs. Clinton leads Mr. Christie by a 53 percent to 41 percent margin in a hypothetical match-up.

People are still divided over the situation surrounding aides to Mr. Christie reportedly closing traffic lanes to the George Washington Bridge to exact political revenge last year. Forty-three percent say it’s an isolated incident, and 46 percent say it’s a sign of broader problems in Mr. Christie’s leadership.

Thirty-two percent of respondents said they were Democrats, 25 percent said Republican, and 37 percent said independent.

The overall poll of 1,003 adults was conducted from Jan. 20-23 and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points. The error margin is 3.5 percentage points for the sample of 873 registered voters and 5 points for the samples of 455 “leaned Democrats” and 457 “leaned Republicans.”

The way I see it, the political establishment is going to do what they want regardless of what people like me want. See: Amnesty.

So, if it doesn't really matter, someone explain to me why I'd vote for Christie?

Let me save some keystrokes. For those who say that it does matter, and Christie is markedly better than any Dem. I haven't seen any evidence.

Gotcha? When there’s no smoking gun?

Attention, football fans and political junkies: Chris Christie’s hanging will be the halftime entertainment at tonight’s Super Bowl. Imagine the ratings!

If you’re shocked at my scoop, that means you missed the Jersey Gov’s indictment, trial and sentencing. In other words, you missed Saturday’s news cycle.

The latest Gotcha! moment was set off by a lawyer’s letter to the Port Authority that claims “evidence exists” showing Christie knew about the lane closures earlier than he claimed.

The immediate reaction by most referees was that Christie is toast. But after further review, the call is reversed. He’s not toast–yet.

For one thing, Christie’s now throwing punches as well as taking them, a sign he’s abandoned hope he could ride out the storm quietly. He knows he’s in a fight for his career.

For another, consider the accusations. The purpose of the lawyer’s letter was to get the Port Authority to pay his legal fees for representing David Wildstein in the case. A key Christie appointee to the authority, Wildstein was responsible for the abusive lane closings on the George Washington Bridge and later resigned.

In addition to legal fees, lawyer Alan Zegas wants Wildstein to get immunity from prosecution. That’s not mentioned in the letter, but its tone reads like a ransom note.

Zegas warns darkly that authority officials are “connected” to “land deals” and that money was used to reward Christie’s friends. The clear suggestion is that his client could tell all—so don’t make him mad.

It’s intriguing but vague and very strange. If the authority reverses itself after what sounds like threats and agrees to pay Wildstein’s fees, it would be accused of paying hush money. That won’t help Wildstein.

None of this means Christie is innocent and there may yet be a smoking gun that nails him. But until there is, there isn’t, so talk of his demise remains premature.

Gosh!  I can't choose.  They are all such good replacements for the Kenyan.  Christie is good humored and blunt, but Ryan is awesomely knowledgeable, and Jeb...ohhh you got to love Jeb.  The wisest of the Bush's.  Why can't they all be on the ticket?
