Cruz on Romney Snub: He's Entitled to Back a Moderate in 2016

By Greg Richter

Sen. Ted Cruz said he isn't offended that 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney didn't include him in a list of possible 2016 contenders for the White House.

"Mitt Romney is entitled to support whomever he likes, to advocate for whomever he likes," the Texas Republican said Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto."

"If he thinks that the presidential candidate should be a moderate, he's entitled to that opinion."

Cruz was responding to Romney's comments a day earlier on Cavuto's show, which also appeared on his Fox Business Network program. Romney had ticked off a list of possible GOP candidates, which included his former running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, as well as former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and current Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

When Cavuto noted he had not mentioned tea party members Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, Romney responded that the two senators "represent different parts of the party."

He said that while they should have the chance to express their views, "I think that we're going to be best if we can unify behind a leader of the party who represents as broad a portion of the party as possible."

Mediaite called that a "very polite shot" at Paul and Cruz.

Cruz was every bit as polite in his response, though he did tell Cavuto that Republicans should nominate a strong conservative.

"And in fact, the way you unify Republicans is just like Ronald Reagan did in 1980," Cruz said. "You stand for conservative principles, free-market principles; you stand for the Constitution."

Great retort by Cruz.  He accents and contrasts Romney's "moderate" bend with his own Conservatism.
