I would hope a few sensible Republicans might explain we may need a few hundred computer programmers, so let them in as legal temporary workers.

We don't need millions MORE agriculture, food service, janitorial workers, e.g.. low skills. But if we do, those jobs could go to our own unemployed.

Quite a number of Americans out of work, don't want to go back to work, that much. In SOME case they are out-hustled by illegal immigrants.

The whole truth: If a company had low skilled assembly work, would they go to a location with illegal immigrant Hispanics, or to Detroit?

Who is willing to work, really?

Query: how is one to get our unemployed to work in these low-skilled jobs if they don't want to?  Indentured servitude is unconstitutional.  A guest worker program that gave guest-worker status to all and sundry provided they had a clean record when they entered and kept it that way while they were here, would be orders of magnitude better than what we have now because, by making it unneccesary for low-skilled workers to be illegal immigrants in order to work here, those workers would come here legally, which means they would be paying payroll taxes, as would their employer, and would be able to rely on minimum wage laws, all of which would mean that they would no longer be undercutting those low-skilled Americans who would be willing to take this sort of work but cannot get it because they've been undercut.  In other words, a guest worker program that allowed even low-skilled workers in - the sort who come here illegally now - would help, not hurt, low-skilled Americans because it would remove one of the great barriers to their ability to get work.

My neighbor told me just yesterday he may close his flooring business in MN. Not for lack of customers, but for lack of workers. He said no one wants to work for $15 an hour to lay carpet when they can collect more from government benefits, said they actually laugh and walk out.  He said those who do want to work hard are going across the border to North Dakota and working the oil fields there for $150 - $250K a year.  So... in the minds of some... we import illegals to do the jobs the people we are paying NOT to work won't do because they can make more not working.  I say cut off the freaking benefits and they can work or starve.
