First family, Cabinet members honor MLK with service activities

By Blake Neff

The first family on Monday honored the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. by spending the day participating in a service project at the DC Central Kitchen.

The kitchen, which was also celebrating its 25th anniversary on Monday, provides food for a variety of community programs while also teaching basic job skills to its workers.

Joining the Obamas was senior advisor Valerie Jarrett, who helped the family prepare meals for distribution to shelters around the area.

Many members of the Obama administration undertook similar ventures on the holiday. After delivering remarks at the National Action Network's Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast, Vice President Joe Biden served guests hot lunch at SOME (So Others Might Eat), a non-profit that assists Washington's impoverished. Joining Biden in volunteering at SOME was Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki.

Other Cabinet secretaries undertaking service projects included Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew, who packed clothes for homeless veterans at the VA Medical Center in Washington, and Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, who served food at Food and Friends, a D.C. organization that delivers meals and groceries to those battling HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other severe illnesses.
