Stars come out for Michelle Obama's birthday party

KPLC 7 News, Lake Charles, Louisiana
WASHINGTON, DC (CNN) - The Obamas are probably going to sleep in Sunday.

They were up pretty late celebrating Michelle Obama's 50th birthday.

Family and friends departed the gathering about 2 a.m.

Stars like former NBA superstar Magic Johnson, singer Smokey Robinson, actor Samuel L. Jackson and others were in attendance.

Several people said Beyonce brought the house down with several of her hit songs.

Michelle Obama's invitations caused a little controversy last week when it was revealed they said only drinks and light snacks would be served.

The food choices didn't appear to bother any of those who went. They mostly wanted to talk about how great the 50-year-old first lady looked, and how much in love President Obama is with his wife.

Guests said Michelle Obama wore red and black, and looked stunning.

Emotional speech – and the Dougie - mark Michelle Obama’s 50th
Posted by
CNN's Sunlen Serfaty

Washington (CNN) – After the sun went down, the stars came out for Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday bash on Saturday night – Beyoncé, John Legend and Stevie Wonder among them.

But even the high-wattage crowd couldn’t outshine the evening’s most memorable moment: President Barack Obama breaking out in the “Dougie” on the dance floor.

Guests said the commander in chief and his wife let their hair down during the late-night dance party, which took up the entire State Floor of the White House – including the gilded East Room, the formal parlors, and the ornate State Dining Room. Guests moved about freely, grabbing snacks, drinks and desserts (but no dinner).

Long rumored to be the evening’s entertainment, Beyoncé performed a special set for the first lady and her guests, who included retired basketball star Magic Johnson and his wife, Cookie, actor Samuel L. Jackson, television chef Rachael Ray, and singers Smokey Robinson, Jennifer Hudson, Gladys Knight and Mary J. Blige.

Also spotted at the hot-ticket event: Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, top Washington chef Jose Andres, fashion designer Michael Kors, tennis legend Billie Jean King and NBC weatherman Al Roker.

Gayle King, the CBS morning show anchor, was among the crowd, though her friend Oprah Winfrey (another Obama friend) wasn’t, because she was attending Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles. King said she would try to hold her own on the dance floor but admitted she only had “seventh-grade” level moves.

Michelle Obama – whose birthday fell on Friday – came decked out in red pants and a red shirt, and her two daughters brought friends along to make the event a family affair.

Guests’ attire ran the gamut: Some wore sparkly gold pants, while others showed up in jeans. All were told to wear comfortable shoes for an evening of dancing - and many listened. Many female guests wore fancy sky-high heels and carried in flats to change into later in the evening.

That probably didn’t come as much surprise to followers of the first lady, who’s known for busting out her dance moves on talk shows with Ellen DeGeneres and Jimmy Fallon, and for encouraging kids to be more active with her Let’s Move program.

"I'm looking forward to hearing old school music,” Jackson said on the way in along with Johnson.

"I'm definitely dancing,” former Lakers star Johnson said. “I'm gonna have a good time. I'm gonna have a ball."

Johnson wasn’t alone, it seemed. Guests leaving the party around midnight said the evening’s highlight wasn’t the superstar performances or the lavish setting – it was the President, cutting loose with the “Dougie” on the dance floor.

Guests also said Obama delivered an emotional tribute to his wife on her milestone birthday.

“He raised the bar for all of us. I don't know how we'll live up to it,” singer James Taylor said on his way out.

The invitation from the White House warned guests about photography, and no cameras were allowed – but musician Herbie Hancock said the president’s remarks were a highlight of the night.

“It was really beautiful and really touching,” he said. “He said something – his voice almost cracked like he was crying. It was just beautiful, a husband speaking about his wife.”

Michelle Obama’s Star-Studded 50th Birthday Bash
By Helena Andrews

Probably still recuperating from last night the East Wing has yet to release an official statement about the first lady’s 50th birthday party at the White House on Saturday. But more details are slowly trickling in about the star-studded dance party even though cameras were a big no no.

The night’s worst kept secret? A performance by mega star Beyonce, who is quickly becoming a fixture at all major Obama milestones. From serenading the first couple with their favorite song–Etta James’ “At Last”–at the first inaugural ball to singing for the rest of us at 2013′s swearing-in ceremony, Mrs. Carter could claim the title diva-in-chief.

Other bold face performers included R&B crooner John Legend, jazz singer Ledisi and fellow Chicagoan Jennifer Hudson. And the VIP guest list hardly stopped there. Former White House occupants Bill and Hillary Clinton, Oprah bestie Gayle King, legendary Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, Actor Samuel Jackson, NBA great Magic Johnson, Motown’s Smokey Robinson, former Olympic figure skater and current State Department senior adviser Michelle Kwan, TV host Rachel Ray, and singer James Taylor were all on hand to wish Mrs. Obama happy birthday.

Leading up to the big event, the White House remained pretty tight-lipped about the festivities. In December the Chicago Tribune reported that the party’s theme would be “Snacks & Sips & Dancing & Dessert” and that guests were advised to bring their dancing shoes and, more specifically, to “eat before you come.” That last bit, which rankled some professional event planners, was confirmed by guest Tom Joyner. On his way home the last night Joyner told journalists waiting outside the White House in the cold that there was definitely “no food.”

Joyner was actually among the few guests who took to social media before the big party, tweeting that he was on his way to 1600 Penn at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Soon thereafter Democratic strategist Donna Brazile gently chided the radio host, tweeting back that the party was supposed to be a secret. She even added the hashtag “#shhhh.”

Clearly some lucky invitees just couldn’t help themselves. Christopher Peregrin, a former assistant to Annie Leibovitz who shot Michelle Obama for the cover of Vogue in 2009 and 2013, took his own snapshot of his golden ticket to the White House and posted it on Instagram the day of the party.

“Fifty and fabulous” is the tagline Mrs. Obama has been using to describe her much-talked about birthday and judging from the star power at the White House on Saturday it was a fabulous affair indeed.

It's a shame we don't have an emoticon for brown-nosing acts of "journalism".  I'll have to resort to this one:

I didn't post the video of her actually dancing because the commentary was so idiotic.

I'm not all that excited about her birthday bash with "stars."  It all depends on what I consider to be a "star" and this list is not impressive.

Was Richard Simmons on the list, too... so far it looks like pay back for the people who have been in the O-Care commercials.

I bet they left hungry. I reckon Michelled didn't serve food because she didn't want to pay for it. A birthday dinner wouldn't be on the taxpayer's dime, and Mooch is cheap...in more ways than one.

Most of the time, she doesn't worry about the taxpayer's dime. More likely, she didn't want the publicity of spending more money so soon after her month long vacation in Hawaii.
she'll wait at least a couple more weeks before she takes us for another million or so.

Beyonce, John Legend fete Michelle Obama at birthday bash

Washington (AFP) - Michelle Obama's 50th birthday bash featured performances by pop stars Beyonce and John Legend, and appearances by a host of A-list celebrities, one prominent guest said Sunday.

"Amazing. Incredible party," political analyst Donna Brazile told CNN the morning after the festivities, about which few details were revealed by the White House.

"Childhood friends there. People from the administration," she gushed about Saturday's exclusive celebration.

"The most important thing is, Beyonce performed, and I have to tell you, John Legend sang 'Happy Birthday,'" said Brazile, a longtime Democratic Party operative who ran Al Gore's unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2000.

"The most moving tribute came (from) (President) Barack Obama, who talked about the woman he met and fell in love with."   :2barf:

CNN reported that the party lasted until around 2:00 am, and was attended by actor Samuel Jackson, singer Smokey Robinson and basketball legend Magic Johnson.

The Washington Post, meanwhile, wrote that actress and singer Jennifer Hudson was also on hand.

The VIP guest list, The Post reported, also included former President Bill Clinton and his wife ex-secretary of state Hillary Clinton, former Beatle Paul McCartney, former Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan and folk singing legend James Taylor.

Michelle Obama turned 50 on Friday to great national fanfare, including magazine interviews and television profiles of her life and her role in history as America's first African American first lady.

Closely watched as a fashion icon and praised for social causes that include working with military families and fighting against childhood obesity, the first lady has polled a 65 percent popularity rate -- a good 20 points higher than her husband.

Beyoncé and Stevie Wonder played a top-secret 50th birthday party for Michelle Obama on Saturday night at the White House.

Spies said that more than 300 guests — including Paul McCartney, Jennifer Hudson, Bill and Hillary Clinton and Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg — were required to check their phones before entering the bash so there could be no photos or tweeting.

Spies told Page Six that guests arrived beginning at 8:30 p.m. through the East Wing, then enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the State Dining Room as well at the White House’s Green, Blue and Red Rooms.

“This was the party of the year in DC,” explained a guest. “The first family had a mix of friends, politicians, athletes, entertainers and business execs.”

Singer Ledisi, a Michelle fave, kicked off the evening’s entertainment followed by a half-hour set from Beyoncé, during which the diva sang “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and “Irreplaceable.” John Legend then appeared to croon “Happy Birthday” to Michelle and presented a cake while President Obama toasted to his wife.

A wild dance party then kicked off with DJ Cassidy spinning tunes. And Wonder jumped onstage with the DJ for a medley of songs including “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours).”

The party raged till 2 a.m., spies said, for guests including Janelle Monáe, Samuel L. Jackson, Angela Bassett, Ashley Judd and Gayle King.

Also in the crowd were VP Joe Biden, Attorney General Eric Holder, Smokey Robinson, former pro athletes Billie Jean King, Alonzo Mourning, Magic Johnson, Emmitt Smith and Ahmad Rashad as well as Google’s Eric Schmidt, Disney honcho Bob Iger, 32 Advisors’ Robert Wolf, American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault, Blackstone COO Tony James, Carlyle Group co-founder David Rubenstein, Haim Saban, Donna Karan and the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Though signs at the party said “no social media,” Hudson managed to tweet afterward, “We had such a good time with the 1st family in dc tonight!”
Eat, drink and be merry, yo.

I knew there was an underlying reason why I always preferred the gritty (and conservative) Mick Jagger to syrupy, insipid (and over-rated, IMO) Paul McCartney.  Never liked him since The Beatles disbanded.

Happy Birthday MO! We can’t possibly thank you enough for all you’ve done!
Michelle Obama's Mirror

You’ve probably noticed: the photo embargo, backed by the full faith, credit and retaliatory power of the U.S. government, was in full force for Lady M’s big, historic, Fab Fifty bash last night. So it’s unlikely that you will see much of the actual party that you paid for.

The photo-Gestapo gendarmes were out in full force. As of this morning they had confiscated “detained” over 350 cameras and smartphones that will be scanned for data by the NSA before and if they are returned to their rightful owners. Hopefully that will  prevent a recurrence of the release of embarrassing photos like those that emerged of last year’s celebrity studded inaugural after-party at the Big White. ...

As you know, Big Guy gave MO an early birthday present that included an extra 10 day vacation in Hawaii [ed. and some new cheeks and eyebrows],

and followed that up by throwing last night’s really, really big party with everyone who’s anyone (or anyone who made a generous contribution to our Organizing for the Transformation of America effort).

Because I know you’ve been wondering what you gave Lady M for her birthday - and because you’re going to be asked to chip in to cover its cost  later -  I got her to pose with it for you. And it’s the perfect gift because, as MO told People magazine: "Women should have the freedom to do whatever they need to do to feel good about themselves."

The WH must have really taken all cell phones and cameras and closed off all press. Because the UK paper that usually has photos our press is not allowed, does not even have any pictures.

Maybe Mooch didn't want to be photo'd doing the hoochie coo with Lady Gaga. I imagine the party became a drunken mess, particularly since there was no food...or was there? Maybe that is why they kept it secret. Feeding 300 rich guests with expensive tastes could cost big bucks.
